XP Clients not appearing in DNS

Bit of an odd problem here. Got about 30 PCs all identical, from the same image. However about 4 of them do not appear to be registering themselves in DNS. They work fine apart from that , getting policies, logins working etc and they can resolve all other hosts on the network apart from themselves.

 

Checking the DNS servers shows no entries for them. Running ipconfig/registerdns has no effect and also registers no error in the event viewer.

 

I've tried reimaging, recreating their AD account and nothing seems to work. No errors are appearing at the client or the DNS servers either.

 

Anyone else seen anything like this?

is their dns server address correct?

 

ipconfig /all

 

does the dns server address match your dns server(s)?

do your DHCP servers have it set to always update dns set?

 

if not change it then do ipconfig/release ipconfig/renew

Yes to all of the above. Every other pc is the place is working OK as well!

Bit of an update. Still haven't found a fix for these but I have noticed the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DNSRegisteredAdapters is empty on failing machines, but is fully populated on working machines.

 

Does that mean its failing because the key is missing, or is the key missing because its failing to register with the DNS server?

Have you tried re-imaging the machines or use an up to date working image from one of the other machines. Therefore it will rule out the software. You could also perform a clean install of Windows to see if that helps. Then you will know its the NIC rather than the image.
