Spiceworks is also good free tool.

I'm another one for Spiceworks. It's great. You can inventory your workstations, servers, printers, access points, switches.. You can even check on AV and Licenses

We have Spiceworks but that's mostly for the helpdesk. We use it's inventory as a double-check against out main inventory database. I coded something up in PHP and MySQL which works okay for us.

Try scanning set IPs rather than a whole range.

I suggest OCS, has clients for mulitple platforms (mac/unix/windows)
