Wow looks great. Whenever anyone tells me of a bargain I always go to ebuyer to check it out - but they are selling it for £117.80 Ex. VAT. I presume that the above price is Ex. VAT too, but I can't tell without entering in some Credit Card details at the 'checkout' part.

There have been a lot of price reductions on hard drives over the last week or so. Expect a lot of deals like this to come available once suppliers move on their old stock. Even 80Gb drives have dropped slightly but the biggest price drops are in the larger capacities

Last week I ordered fourteen 500Gb external drives from CCL at £98 (excl VAT) each.

I think what will become more important soon is that they're eSATA. Think about when the 1Tb drives start arriving later this year, transfering all that over USB2 just starts becoming unfeasible, but at 3Gb/s it's fine.

Trouble is the compatibility, none of my servers have PCI-E slots, only PCI-X and the price difference for the controller cards between the two slots is two fold! Ridiculous.

eejit: eSATA is the new standard for External drives, basically the same as SATA but with a modified connector for use outside the computer. As I mentioned, the data transfer rate is currently 3Gb/s, a vast improvement on the 480mb/s of USB2.

Midget: Backups. A lot of redundancy there but just figured for ease of use sake. One external drive per each of the 5 servers, two for the Public Area. Will transfer all data via USB2 over a weekend. Two sets of drives for two weeks of offsite backups.
