Ideas for a after school IT club for year3/4 (primary)

Scratch is already started on Enrichment day on Friday for Year 5/6.

Design a School intranet site, website, or other web project.

 

Get them working in small groups on each little area creating content, initially in word or similar, and then transfer to Frontpage, which should be within the score of their abilities. I created my first fully featured site including animated buttons and all sorts this way at the age of 12/13

I used to work in a primary and had to run after school clubs. For Years 5 & 6 I had them making their own websites. For the younger kids (Years 3 & 4) we did some stop motion animation (using DigiBlues, but Movie Maker could work just as well I suppose), and we also did some comics - they went to the sites were you can create your own super hero. They designed a super hero and then turned it into a comic using the like of Publisher etc.

 

After school clubs don't need to be overly complex - just needs to get the kids attention

Actually did that comic super hero in Enrichment day. will look in to website and motion animation suff.

Group work is brilliant for the age group. PowerPoint animations will enthuse them. You cant give them anythign too technical. Could take apart a PC and show them that? Pass the bits round?

Something else we did was to use Nintendo Wii (and older at the time) games and group games and the likes. Wii is brilliant.

Dangers of the internet, or internet safety (good age group to do this with actually).

Sadly some parents use it as an extended childminding service and don't seem to care what their children do after school as long as they are occupied. Having said that I run both a KS1 and KS2 club and try to give those attending something worthwhile to do. We have the excellent Sherston Megadeal package and it's usually a good opportunity to get them exploring various components from there. I usually let them have a bit of fun time as well and their usual choice is the safe for schools games site Games - The Best Free Online Games Fun At Friv Games!

I agree SpeckyTecky, but it was (and might be for you) nice to give them something useful to take away with them, rather than babysitting.

What about creating simple animations using Pivot? I've started a group off at my nephews' school and they're loving it. A couple of the kids have produced some amazing work.

Any painting programme, or in fact anything creative!

 

Get yourself a couple of Digital Blue video cameras, software is easy to set up and use and the kids lived them when I used them.
