Hi I have just got a spec for a dell server to run ubuntu moodle on. Dell wont support ubuntu. How do others do it? I was thinking....... vmware esxi and ubuntu running in a vm?

Only do esxi if you're going to be running other vms on the box as well otherwise you're just adding another layer of stuff to go wrong.

But you'll find unbuntu will run on most things. If in doubt ask on the ubuntu forums

Have dell stopped providing Ubuntu as an option? It seemed to be on alot of servers when I last looked. Just go for it, I'm sure you'll get either Ubuntu, Debian, ESXi or Xen working on it.

 

A benifit of running ESXi or Xen even when only running one VM is it provides an easy backup and restore, and snapshotting facility for people who might not be totally confident with *nix. ie any monkey can double click a VM image and click "restore" should you ever be ill, dead, leave...
