Hide mapped network drives

Hey

 

Is there any way either in VBS or GPO you can hide mapped drives?

Am wanting to hide an F: as all the sims data is on that and teachers are started to have sims.net installed on there computers in their offices.

Hi Tim,

 

For this i think you need to create a custom adm file and use this in your GPOs.

 

I think there are some numbers you have to defin in the adm policy for the different drivers.

Careful though. I don't think some of the legacy 16 bit code (e.g. Nova-T) likes hidden drives.

 

That said, Dan Clark (SIMS forum's version of Geoff) seems to think that in most cases you can get away with using UNCs if you don't install Nova-T on a workstation.

NovaT seems ok with it on our system. The drives are still mapped it's only Explorer that doesn't see them.

I do that with the SIMS drive using hidecalc.

 

It does the calculations and ADM file creation for you.

to hide the drive, why not put a $ in the share name?

That just stops it from being browsed to ... if you have it mapped it is viewable in explorer unless you also then hid that drive via gpo ... and if the drive is mapped after the gpo is applied then you get issues.

 

This was how I found it 12 months ago when I last had a play with similar but I* will be looking at the links above to see if there are some good ideas.

Ive hidden C: in my computer via GP but am wanting users to access it when they type in c:\....\....\...

We just make the SIMS folder read only for the staff...

I've got a mapped drive that I told staff to vacate as I would be taking it out of service over the holidays. I then realised that there are some educational programs that use that mapped drive. Will Hidecalc hide the drive, so they think it's gone or will it make the drive inaccessible?
