RIS Problem

Ive had a look over the forum and i cant seem to find this anywhere

 

Im trying to implement RIS on VMserver.... and i have got it installed and configured.... i have managed to put the base image onto the machine, and then all i did was install SP2 and office 2k3 and then riprep the image back to the server.....

 

I tried to push the image using the standard SIF file that was created and i also tried to replace the SIF file with the one that Dos_Box supplied aswell and in both cases im getting the following

 

It finds the server and it managed to copy all the files... and then after all the files have been copied i get the blue screen with the following message

 

CAUTION: The selected operating system image cannot be modified to match your computers hardware because of a missing driver or lack of resouces.

 

The image may work if you hardware is similar to the hardware use when the image was created

 

Now i know the hardware hasnt changed cause im using the same setting in VM.... it then allows you to press c to continue, on doing that.... it gets to the please wait while windows starts and then just hangs there

 

Have any of you RIS Specialists got any tips?

Peoples experiences with RIPREP can be very hit and miss. I found problems like you and just use a flat install. Most software is installed through GPO and awkward stuff is run on a first logon during the install process. The really awkward stuff is installed by an AutoIT script just to get rid of dialogue boxes etc.

Yea i think this is the way that i am going to have to go down....

 

I do install most of the software via GPO was just trying to see if i could speed it up by have SP2 and Office already installed on the final image that i would push out...

For all my RIS images I use standard Windows XP Images and every so often I customise them using the following tools:

 

nLite - Cool program that allows you to do everything step by step and do lots of handy tweaks

RyanVM's Post SP2 Update Pack - Can be integrated into the image so that you are fully up to date with all the critical updates from Microsoft. Also, contains other packages that can be integrated into the image.

I got it working second time round... and decided to just install the software via GPO..... but i think with a bit more time i will try and do more complex stuff with it

This are all the things I have used with my images although I stayed away from Nlite last time as my meddling had some very strange behaviour regrding plugging in trackballs and such.

You have to be careful of getting "Trigger Happy" with nLite. I've had problems with it too, once I messed with an image and took out so many things that I didn't think I needed and well, I ended up with a machine that refused to join a domain!

 

Nowadays, I leave almost all the removable features alone. I only take out the things I know won't cause any issues, like:

 

Windows Messenger

MSN Explorer

Tour

Briefcase

DOCS Folder

SUPPORT Folder

VALUEADD Folder

 

Everything else I leave pretty much alone, especially Drivers and Services.

 

It's safe to make pretty much any of the tweaks, but the key thing to remember is, if you don't know what the tweak does, leave it alone!

 

I always enable unsigned themes (uxtheme.dll) and turn off Windows File Protection.

 

I also download, and integrate Boooggy's Windows Media Player 11 Addon and run XPize on the image just to make everything look nice!

 

Finally, the icing on the cake, I replace the old Bliss wallpaper with the new EnergyBliss and replace Notepad with Notepad2.

 

There's loads more you can do, but I don't wanna get into too much detail, unless anyone really wants to know!
