Group Policy/ Shutdownerton problem?

Hi folks,

 

Got the idea to shutdown automatically. installed Shutdownerton on server 2008, i followed the manual and imported the template to group policy by typing gpedit.msc and enabled the timly shut down to 7pm.

came in the morning and found out server was shut down? im bit new to group policy. what am i doing wrong here?

As far as I'm aware you don't actually install the application on the server, just the adm templates. I could be wrong as it was a while since I set it up on our 08 server. Bet you got loads of phone calls ask why this and that was not working....ooops!

in release 1.3 adm templates are integrated into msi package. how can i separate?

1. Do a custom install and unselect the 'Shutdownertron Service' component, and select the 'Group Policy Templates' component

2. Don't apply your shutdown policy to servers

I think you applied the settings in a group policy object that your servers are under.

That's exactly what you have done, I think. I did it too when first installing shutdownertron. It is put in a group policy on the server and you must be careful that you dont put it in the domain controller policy - as I did- where the server is - coz then, as you have found out, it switches off your server! I got into worse trouble as I accused the cleaners of hitting the off button with the vacuum cleaner! (yes, my server is on the floor - DON'T ask)

If there isnt a suitable policy and you dont want to reorganise your tree, just create and link a policy under one group of computers and then link other groups as well (eg mine is created under 'IT SUITE' and linked to it under ' Library', 'Staffroom' and the like.

Can you give us a screenshot of your group policy tree and then we can see where it SHOULD be

The policy should be in the "workstations" OU (or equivilent), NOT at the top of your tree ie where the "Default DOmain Policy" is. Remove shutdownatron from the servers,.

 

Any problems, just say you don't want someone to press the red button and make you explode!

Are you SURE you havent linked the default domain policy to shutdownertron? Or click 'enforced'

That's what I'm saying - he isnt fine and so somehow the server - MUST be being affected by the policy.

Ah - a thought - your server isnt in the IT suite is it and therefore actually in the ICT room OU?

This didnt work, i did re installed the shutdownerton on server gain not on client machines. this time just selected the and select the 'Group Policy Templates' component. and linked it to a GPO under ICT Room. but it diidnt work, do i have to install shutdownerton on client machine as well? i didnt install it on client machines only in server.

Yes. The whole point of Shutdownertron is the agent on the client does the work, so if network connectivity is lost or the server goes away the payload is still executed. It's an MSI so that you can deploy it silently with your normal tools, whatever they may be.

That's not Shutdowertron's fault. Run gpupdate /force /boot at a prompt.
