At the moment most support staff sign in and out in a register held by the main office. This is supposed to be in the event of a fire etc.

The SMT have finally decided that this isn't working as some support staff don't sign in and neither do teachers.

We are looking for a system that would be simple, cost nothing and still allow staff to use any school entrance. It should not be seen as 'Big brother' watching, but give an accurate account of who is in the building at any given time in the event of an emergency.

What do other schools do and how effective is it?

Not cost effective but we use Prox Cards (we also have access control) to swipe in\out. This goes to a management console that can print a register for fire purposes. If you are interested the company is called Access It Data Ltd Edited by frosty

Hmm simple and cost nothing yet cover all staff and doors, come on get real.

SMT should enforce the use of signing in and out if that's what is in place, regular fire drills and any member of staff not accounted for because they didn't sign in or out should be disciplined.

I agree, I can't think of anything that would cost "nothing" yet provide that kind of service.

Simple

Cost nothing

Allow staff to use any entrance

Pick two.

We use the tried-and-tested "most staff probably want to avoid being burnt alive" method, plus regular fire drills and ear-bashings for people who don't take it seriously. Non-regular staff (peripatetic music, outside speakers) all sign-in and (in the latter case) usually have an attached herder.

I totally agree, but we were asked to look at alternatives. :)

i print teach lists from sims, as well as a modified support staff list (listing job - necessary for instant cover, exam invig etc). then i have a report in sims that prints off who is teaching each period, this is then cross checked with the teaching staff list (we have staff who teach at the vi form - seperate building).

the problem we have is what cover staff are in, as well as associate staff. still wip at present

the worst is that we are in charge of taking staff registers in the event of a drill/fire. so we have to put this into place

Not free but cunninghams do a ID register which we use for our sixth formers regarding firelists etc - if you have a cashless system with them its just another bolt on
