lol @ PCWorld...i had that reaction when i saw the price!

 

The funny thing is i sat with the guy whilst he did his sales bit. I obviously came across a bit gormless.....or maybe its because im a female...

Price up the componenets yourself from Google and then query the price differential!

 

There is no better way of getting my back up than (usually young) male sales nerds assuming that I'm a dumb female. The guy who who tried to tell me that I was was wrong when he sent a cabinet that didn't fit the switches we'd ordered from him nearly died. The cabinet sent wasn't the one on the quote, but he wouldn't accept it. I informed him that origami was not helpful to the function of switches... and then demanded that he put his manager on the line.

I have, on the rare occasion that I've phoned a company for tech help in installing their software, been told to "ask the IT guy at your school". The surprise in their voice when I tell them I'm the Senior "IT guy" is worth the phone call!

Let us know what their excuse is... it's going to have to be a good one! Why does the cashless system need one? Are they filming everyone paying?

 

What do they need the converter for too? It sounds like the sort of thing they'll stick on a quote hoping you won't query its presence, but that you won't actually need. Most kit would have USB connectors these days, surely?

 

This sounds like motor-mechanic budgeting. When I was a teenager it was known as "being Appleyarded" as the local Appleyards British Leyland (shows my age :D) dealer had a bad reputation for adding things onto the bill that they hadn't done or that they hadn't fitted.

Admittedly they were added to the "recommended options section" but still added to the final price..

 

I cant think what would be serial on a POS these days....even the biometric thingy must be USB?!

 

The cam is a complete waste of time. Apparently its so you can take a photo of the new kids for the system. But as they are not allowed to write to our SIMS database its only held locally on the machine so in my mind a pointless exercise as we might as well add them to SIMS.

I'll place money it's an RS422 adapter, which is a less-commonly used serial standard, commonly used to connect POS receipt printers up to a terminal. This caught me out a few years back when I brought a receipt printer from e-bay with the intention of getting our helpdesk to print out little tickets we could stick on machines in the workshop, so we know why they're there etc. Of course, I couldn't get it to work because it's a different serial standard, although at the time I didn't realise that - it was only a few years later when I found it in a box and had another go I realised why it didn't work. Doh!

I brought a USB > Serial Converter of eBay a few months ago, cost me 99p from China! and it works a doodle! great for configuring switches that need it :p

Just flicked through quote....the convertor is there but no receipt printer! lol

 

I may well be wrong, it is just an educated guess.

Do they have a cash draw or touch screen in the system? for some reason they like to keep those two on serial for POS systems which just confuses me.

Where are they buying it from? PC-World?

 

If "webcam" actually means something like an Axis IP camera, which looks and functions much like a webcam, that quote would be in the right ballpark.

Legacy compatibility. Most shops adopted EPOS systems 15-20 years ago or more when it was the only standard, hence existing equipment in shops uses these standards and EPOS manufacturers remain loyal to them so retailers don't have to change their cash draws, printers, barcode scanners etc. if they have a technology upgrade, or if a componant breaks on an existing system they still have spare parts that are compatible, so they just stick with the old standards for everything.

That's an RS-232 to usb converter not an RS-422 one though.

Most of these things are nothing but a cable. I used to work for an epos company in the repair centre.

As stated price displays tend to still be serial based. Most cash draws Will use a unique connector but the few I've seen and worked with looked like a modem/phone connector.

 

Before buying a £150 cable find out if its just a cable or if its got an electronic converter on it. Depending on the system it might need a voltage converter built in
