mjs_mjs Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 i'm after an mp3/wav/flac player (as many formats as possible), that has a good audio chip, 3.5 jack for headphones, and doesn't have a requirement for any specific software. if possible i would like to have folders on the device (as thats how my music is structured alredy) and for it to be able to create and play playlists. oh and it should be rechargeable by usb.
K.C.Leblanc Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 I'm not sure it does play lists, but my little Sandisk Sansa clip does the rest. There's a new clip plus which also has a Micro SD card slot. 1
tommej Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Creative zen vision:m - chunky little beast but they're rock solid and cover all of your needs. Should be able to get one cheap on ebay too! 1

AFAIK it does do playlists but you have to create them on the MP3 player itself, 1

Sansa Clip 8GB just to comfirm, can i drag and drop onto it like a USB removable device as i'll be using it across windows, macs and linux machines.

I've only used it with a PC, which lets you just drag and drop the files (no special software required). In the menu it offers USB mode; 'Auto Detect', MTP or MSC. 1

andy_b Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 (edited) Another vote for the clip. Mine has survived a machine wash too! Although listed as unstable, I've been running rockbox on it for a while without any problems. The only thing I'd say is expect to purchase new headphones. The ones supplied are poor (probably partly the reason for the low overall price) and don't do the clip any justice at all. Edited September 28, 2010 by andy_b More Information
andy_b Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Interesting. Apart from being contrary, is there any real advantage to doing this with a Clip? My Clip says "Model: Clip" so I take it it's version 1? I originally installed rockbox when one of the official firmwares added a volume limit to comply with some EU legislation. I since learnt that setting the region to North America removes the cap and enables the full volume again. I've found rockbox works better with the way I have my mp3s. Most of them don't have ID3 tags and are just in folders and i was too lazy to create playlists, which sometimes got a little annoying navigating albums on the original firmware. It has a customisable display, more granular audio controls and you can play snake! If you are happy with the original firmware i can't say there is any overwhelming reason to change, but neither have i considered going back. IIRC clip v2 have official firmware start with 2. and clip v1 start with 1.
mjs_mjs Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 many thanks to all of you for your comments, i now have a clip from amazon, arived today and currently uploading my music to it. the audio chip doesn't sound to bad at all but it is tiny really. lol. thanks guys.
