Richings110 Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 (edited) Hi Guys/Girls We have bought a new batch of HP Compaq 615 Laptops for our school. They came with Windows 7 pre installed and we had the downgrade for XP which we put on all of them. We then smartcliented the laptops to CC3 (RM). They run fine for the first time untill one or two get given back to us saying they are looping. They loop when you get to the XP loading screen but just before a blue screen appears. We managed to find out that the error says 'Page fault in non paged area'. We have done a few tests where we enabled VGA mode, which worked and managed to get onto the CC3 log on window. After a restart, the blue screen appeared again and started to loop, to solve this all the time we had to keep enabling VGA mode. We believe it's the display drivers. But we would like to guidance please if possible. spec - http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/searchtools/item-detailsInactive.asp?Sku=Q215791 Thanks Pete. Edited September 23, 2010 by Richings110
steve Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 If you press F8 at boot up you can stop the reboot after the BSOD. That should allow you to get more info on the fault.

Yes, we have looked through everything on the laptops. They are cleverly designed where you can run system checks, memory, hard drive etc.. however nothing comes back saying somethings wrong. We've looked though the BIOS and have noticed you can disable items on the laptop such as webcams, bluetooth, wireless etc... but still haven't found anything that can help us.
Richings110 Posted September 23, 2010 Author Posted September 23, 2010 Also, in response to your reply Steve, We did manage stop the rebooting and see what the BSOD said, it was just about a Page fault in Nonpaged area.
SYNACK Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Sounds like it could be an incompatibility between the ancient software XP/CC3 and the modern GPU drivers. Possibly with the mirroring driver to clone the screen for remote monitering If it is you could look to fix this by figiting with the drivers. Looking on AMD's site there is not even a download for XP drivers, you could try the latest Vista ones AMD Support Search . HP does have a single driver posted which you could try reinstalling Compaq 615 Notebook PC - Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center you may need to run it without the video drivers using the default PnP driver to avoid the compatibility issue (this does mean no external graphics or GPU acceleration though)

I will see what we can do after this experiment. I will reply back with the results.
gl3nnym Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 We have recently purchased a batch of the same laptops all downgraded to XP and CC3. Not having the BSOD issue though luckily so it could be an incompatibility with a package you're sending out? We are however having issues with 20 laptops trying to access the wireless all at once.

Hi Gl3nnym Great to hear your not having the same problem as we are, this is very frustrating. Could you please tell me how you went about putting CC3 onto the laptops? Did you smartclient them? I suppose you downgraded to XP first (SP3). Thanks.

Hi Richings110 The laptops came with Windows 7 pre-installed and in the box was a Windows XP CD. We booted them all with the XP CD and had that installed then installed the drivers from the supplied driver CD. We then did a normal smart client on the laptops and let them build as normal with our standard package list. That was all we did! We logged on to them individually and setup the wireless but nothing else was done. Did you install drivers from the supplied CD? Or did you Ghost/image them all?

Hi Gl3nnym We did exactly what you did, downgrade to XP with disk > Install all drivers from Disk that came with laptops > Then smartclient. I guess there must be something wrong with our software on the server. But what software? Hmmm Thanks.
Richings110 Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 We (Our tech Team) are going to do another test with these where we will build to CC3 in a different group, where there are hardly any applications being allocated. Hopefuly we can narrow down what software is causing this problem. The great thing about these laptops though, you are able to disable features through the BIOS, so easily, you don't have to go uninstalling anything! Kids can no longer use Webcams and Bluetooth I will get back to you all with our results... if there is any.
Richings110 Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 We have had over 6 laptops today looping with this problem... as you can see this is getting worse. We have discovered that its looping when it gets a bad shutdown, either from a low battery or a finger to the shutdown button during windows xp loading screen. I manage to get passed the looping stage after going to F8, then F8 again for advanced options, then choosing disable automatic restart, this shows the BSOD. When i go to Enable VGA Mode, it works fine, i log in and i removed the ATI graphics from add and remove programs. After looking on System Information through the BIOS, it says the version date of the graphics is March. There is a new Graphics update for May. So i have decided to go install this onto the laptop in VGA Mode. We successfuly managed to get passed the looping with this new graphics update. However, this has not stopped the problem perminantly. We can still get this laptop to loop if we turned it off inappropriately. Not sure what to suggest at this moment in time.
gl3nnym Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 @Richings110 Now that you mention it. We had 4 of those laptops come in this morning with looping issues. They seems to be the same thing whereby after a bad shutdown (finger on button) they don't come back on. Not sure if there is anything to prevent this from happening as they seem very temperamental.

For the moment you could just disable the dirty volume bit check which may prevent the looping Microsoft: Windows XP Pro - How to reset the harddisk "error bit"? I imagine that the laptops are probably a little less troublsome when running the primary shipped OS as they can use the latest drivers as opposed to the regressed ones.
bart21 Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 hi people We have been running compaq 615's with xp for about 9 months. we have had no problems with the false shutdowns or loops at all. We did not use the downgrade media that came with the laptops but our usual install cd for xp then put the product key stuck on the laptop in, and load drivers from hp.com. All i can think is maybe one of the dribvers on the downgrade media cd is causing your issue, try an xp base cd then download the drivers from hp, if you can to eliminate this. just to point out, we are not CC3. nick

We will try our own Windows XP SP2! disk and not SP3 then install the drivers from the HP Site.
Richings110 Posted September 28, 2010 Author Posted September 28, 2010 (edited) Right here we go, We used the laptops Windows XP SP3 downgrade disk, then after that install we used the driver disk to install the Prerequisite Software, System Default Settings, HP Wireless Assistant and the HP Softare Updates on the Recommended Installs. Then on the Hardware enabling drivers, we un-ticked Bluetooth, VGA and Camera drivers and installed the rest it needed. So most important of all, we did not install the Video graphic drivers the laptop needs. After smartclienting the laptop and giving it a bad shutdown during the XP loading screen, it did not loop what so ever!!! However, we did another test on another laptop after smartclienting, I installed the Video graphic drivers from the driver disk and did a bad shutdown, it then caused a consistant loop. This tells us it's the Video drivers causing this problem. Just don't install the Video drivers, leave it out. The laptop runs fine on 1024 x 768 resolution, however when scrolling down on an internet page for example, it does flicker on the screen. The kids will just have to put up with this. So yeah, don't install the VGA drivers from disk, leave them out, and problem solved! Edited September 28, 2010 by Richings110
dan_pricE_101 Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Thanks for the help Richings110 !!! one of my schools bought 8 of these compaq 615's and annother bought 4, and i also asked for the xp downgrade and they all had the same problem, i thought it was WDS originaly untill i built one from scratch and the same problem occured. does anyone know if HP have or will release a driver which doesnt screw the machine up? Once again thanks!!!
gl3nnym Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Just to bring up the thread again. We are getting a steady stream of these laptops back to be rebuilt (about 1 or two per day) and we are now doing it without the display drivers. Will post with my findings.
xpflop Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Hi all I am new to this but having a problem just loading XP on to my 615 using a XP pro disk that loads on to my PC's no problem ? imunro01 Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 If I remember correctly, you will need to downlaod the appropriate SATA drivers and slipstream those into a windows disk. It should then install correctly.
xpflop Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Hi thank you I will try that and let all know if works OK . Cheers Pete
