Anyone managed to get Quicktime deployed on Win 7?

I hate it, I really dont want to deploy it, but there is an archaic piece of languages software that requires it to run.

 

Quicktime always used to be one of the simplest things to deploy on XP - start the setup, get the MSI from the temp folder, make a few modifications to stop updates etc and it was done.

Again I have done all that but deploying it to Windows 7 machines, it briefly flashes up 'installing managed software Quicktime' for a second and thats it. Nothing is installed, and nothing is logged in the event log (helpful!)

 

Even the old, known working version (7.62) we used with XP does the same thing.

 

Just wondered if anyone had got it working and had any tips?

Yeh I have manged to get it deployed! Just installed it on my windows 7 image!

I'm attaching an MST that worked for me last time I deployed Quicktime 7.65.17.80 onto Windows 7. I haven't tested it with later versions as I don't deploy Quicktime any more (no-one's missed it yet).

 

Things this MST does:

 

• Removes all the shortcuts
  
• Stops the QT tray icon from being installed
  
• (Theoretically) prevents the nag screen to upgrade to Pro
  
• Stops the updater from being installed
  

 

As always, YMMV.

Windows media player on windows 7 will play quick time file which negates the need to install Quick time, Apple updater, google toolbar and all the krap apple now bundles with it.

runcmd - yeah in 99% of cases you now dont need it, but when theres an old bit of software that checks for quicktime before it will run...

i think ive had it working on 7 but ive generally stopped deploying it unless asked for it and nobody has yet

infact dosent the msi need editing to only contain language 1033 (or if you set msi deploy to ignore language it installs in taiwaneese)

Not 100% sure as i am not at work at the moment but i know i had problems installing it on XP without editing it in orca. You need to remove all language mst's and only include 1033 (whatever mst file is in english)

 

Since getting it to work on XP, ive deployed the same edited msi on Windows 7 and havent heard any problems from staff.

I've applied and enforced the GPO, a RSOP shows the GPO is applied but the MSI isnt listed in software installation in the RSOP window, and doesnt log anything (eg it doesnt attempt to even install)

 

Dont understand it...I'm used to troubleshooting failed MSI deployments, but usually when they leave an error! Am I missing something obvious?

Method 2 (A BETTER VERSION): If you open up the QuickTime.msi package through ORCA (DON"T START A TRANSFORM FOR THIS STEP), then immediately click on 'View->Summary Information. (If you have already started a blank transform, you will be unable to edit the package information.) You'll notice the supported languages are something like, 1033,1036,1031,1041,1043,1040,2052,1034,1030,1035,1042,1044,1053,1028. Remove them all but 1033 -- English. Then save the msi overtop of itself (another thing I absolutely hate doing, but it is required this time). This method will cleanly get the English version to install through GP happily. I used this method for getting 7_1_5_120 on my systems.

iirc some of the changes had to be done direct to the msi not as an mst file language in 99% sure needed to be direct

Damnit, it's been so long I forgot that I had in fact done this, and suspect my MST won't work without it. Willith has posted the method for achieving this in his post above.

 

As a tip for testing, I always test transforms and edits before deploying them by calling a command line similar to this:

 

msiexec /i setup.msi TRANSFORMS="\\path\to\transform.mst" /qb

 

Suppresses all the UI except the progress bar, so you can test any automation you've put in the transform. It's a pretty good approximation of a GPO deployment with a lot less hassle.

After reading all these higgeldy piggeldy posts and not really understanding any of it- does anyone have a simple, step-by-step way of deploying Quicktime over the network using Group Policy?

 

I've used Advanced Installer to create an MSI after installing quicktime on a pc but i'm not sure if this is the best way of doing it.
