map drive to users server directory, not share

Hi all,

 

I can map a drive (so to speak) to the share, but i wanted to map a drive to the users folder inside the share, each of our students do not have their own network share, but instead it goes \\servername\students\surname_letter\username

 

and thats the folder i want to map. is there any way i can do this?

i have always been old school and used net use H: \\servername\students\surname_letter\%username% or if the home folder is set in AD, then use net use h: /home

AD bound macs can map the AD specified home folder automatically with smb or afp. This can be pointed to a separate server with the same share names by altering the hosts file on the mac if desired.

 

If you want to mount a folder that is not their AD home, that is not the same path for all users, then you will most likely have to do the mount with a logon script

What is the path you are trying to mount? Which part of the below path is the share?

 

\\servername\students\surname_letter\username

 

Last time I tried, OS X will only mount as far as \\Server\Share\Subfolder, it won't mount beyond the first subfolder for a home (same with afp). Do you want to point them to the AD home folder or are their files on a seperate server?

OS X will only look for the folder at the root of the volume. The share is always \\Server\Share it has no concept of mapping a subfolder. The only way to get client to use 0900000 as the home folder would be for the share to be at "a"

Be careful here, as DMcCoy has said Mac OS X Server will have problems mapping to any more than 3 OU's deep......

I'm not sure it will matter what you do it will always mount the share root, and doesn't look beyond that for a home folder. You could still mount the share and access the data as it is, but you will not be able to use it as the "home folder".

 

I had to reorganise my entire file sharing with multiple shares to get macs working correctly with the home folder, even then I'm not even using the same server and also use AFP (which has the same limitation). Does the cc03 part indicate that it's a RM network? My is standard so I was free to reorganise as needed.

What is it that you are trying to do? Are you trying to make it so that users don't have to navigate through a tonne of folders to their home dir?

 

Would it Ok to place their home dir in the dock? There is a tick box when managing the dock preferences to do this very thing. It makes the whole process simpler, but of course only if this is what you are wanting to do.

nah were are not rm thank goodness, cc is just a prefix for our servers, i am trying to do exactly what hodgehi mentions, give users access to their my documents folder which happens to be stored centrally on ccdata03, under a share called students, and then in a sub folder called a,b,c d etc, and then in a folder called their username, eg 0900000. i dont want them to have to navigate through all of these folders but want them to have direct access. ive already told workgroup manager to add an icon to the users dock, which works, they can access their server my docs folder, however when using applications there is no way of getting to this dock icon.

 

my users have two areas to save to, the local mac, and the server my docs. all that shows up in applications is the local mac.

Install services for unix (i.e NFS) on the Windows fileserver and mount wherever you like?

 

There should be no problem with

mount.nfs  server:/folder/subfolder/1/2/3 ~/ServerHomeDir 

for example

 

(NFS on Windows, though better in 2008 & Win 7, does have some flaws.)
