[windows software] Adobe CS4/5 - single user

Our Marketing Manager wants Adobe CS4/5 to do layout and produce publications for print as she's finding Microsoft Office and pdf995 a pain, unsurprisingly.

 

As a school, we have no need or budget for volume licensing and single license for install on one machine would be plenty.

 

I'm trying to work out the cheapest way of achieving this. The student and teacher product must be used on a private PC, but it seems it would be cheaper to buy her a private laptop that doesn't go on the network (we have no wireless) and this version than pay for the commercial version of the product.

 

Any ideas gratefully received.

Which programs out of Adobe are you after? It wasn't that savagely priced last time I looked at individual ones, around £150 per product on single user licence which isn't too bad really (that price is InDesign)

She's simply told me she wants CS4 or 5, I'm not sure which bits she actually needs.

Depending on what pricing you qualify for you can get CS5 Design Premium for less than £300 (source). DP includes Photoshop Extended, InDesign, Fireworks, Illustrator, Dreamweaver & Acrobat 9 Pro amongst others, so has everything she could possibly use or need, and is far more cost effective than buying individual products.

I think if you went to Adobe Direct you may get it cheaper ..

P.S. It is cheaper going to Adobe Direct for them looking at the US Prices anyway (sadly they don't post up the UK Prices but advise you to contact a Reseller)

Ah, I see .. Well good luck anyway .. CS5 is certainly a nice package .. I use it myself (treated myself when it came out to the Master Edition) ..

As a licence supplier I can tell you how it works for single user licences. Individual students or teachers can buy the "Student and teacher" version of any Adobe package. This is the cheapest type of licence, but is meant for personal use and definitely not for anything to do with business. Teachers and institutions can also buy the Education Box edition, which is the same software, but licensed for the type of stuff she'll need to do for you. As an institution, you can also buy a single licence and a separate set of installer disks. A bit more messy, but even though this version is a volume licence, there is no minimum quantity. As an example, I'll use Adobe Design Standard CS5, which gives you Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat - probably exactly what she needs, but let me know if not. The Student Teacher version costs £195.00 plus VAT, the Education Box costs £355.00 plus VAT and a single licence plus media costs £326.00 plus VAT from us. A commercial design company would be paying over £950 for the same package so discounts are good!

There's no difference at all in the functionality or the rules for usage. The box is easier because we carry it on the shelf and can just ship it out for next day delivery, whereas the licence is created for us by Adobe specifically for you, which takes a day or two, and then emailed to you and posted on your Adobe account web page. Some people like that because they can always log in to recover the serial number. So different delivery method, but essentially the same software. Hope that helps.

Is your school a member of the Specialist Schools trust? Their members can buy at CLP3 (cheaper than Student & Teacher Box). As Robbocop said, the Student & Teacher box cannot be used on a machine owned by the school. The member of staff will also need to activate it with Adobe by sending staff ID to them in order to obtain a serial number.

Sadly not; we're in the worst of all worlds - a small independent prep school. No money and we have to pay VAT!

What about one of Adobe's cheaper competitors? Depending on what she need software like Quark Xpress, Corel Draw or Serif Design Suite might do the job she needs but at a cheaper price. Could be worth her getting a few trials of alternatives?

 

For Print, Quark would be a good alternative to Indesign (Cost about £85 + VAT)

I work for a reseller, with Adobe you can actually buy under Adobe TLP Academic (which is volume licensing) with just 1 licence.

This way you could install on a work machine, the pricing is still more than the Student and Teacher edition which as others mentioned is the cheapest way of purchasing.
