Morning

 

I have a virtual 2008 server on vsphere. I want to be able to get more bandwith to it.

 

What's the best way? I was thinking another virtual nic and dns round Robin?

 

Any suggestions?

You could dedicate a physical nic on the host server (or two, if you have spares and trunk/aggregate the links in the VM and at the physical switch). Bear in mind that you'll still only get a maximum of 1 gig per client transaction (and you won't get that due to overheads). Edited by pete

another virtual NIC is not going to do anything if it is going through the same physical nic, (in fact it would probably cause a fractional decrease due to overheads)

 

like pete says add some physical nics and aggregate the links.

 

I've just put quad port nics in our ESX boxes to handle VM traffic (aggregated, vlan tagged), and use the onboard nics purely for vmkernel/vmotion/vcenter traffic.

As above, more physical NICs, then you can add more virtual nics if needed.

 

We use 5 physical NICS for VM traffic on the main ESX hosts (12 nics in total in each host) and these 5 are split over onboard+both quadport cards (redundancy).

wow, i don't quite feel so great about my 6 port / 8 port hosts anymore :)

Yeah, Just to add the way forward is to get more Physical NIC's creating more virtual NIC's on the same Physical NIC is not going to make any difference and as someone said above may even cause a decrease in performance.

 

How many physical NIC's do you have at the moment mate?

Cheers guys. We have 3 for curriculum traffic. 1 for the San switch 1, 1 for the second San switch and another one for admin traffic. We use the ip hash for the 3 nics for curriculum. Got about 5-6 per host 4 host in total. So buying a 4 port nic for each host will help?

How many VM's are these 3 nic's shared between? And what do the VM's do? it might not be the nic that is the bottleneck.

 

adding a 4 port nic will get you "more bandwidth" but will this solve your problem? I can't answer this because you didn't state what it was.

 

bear in mind I'm running 25+ vms (and growing) over 3 hosts.

how does this get you more bandwith? surely all your doing by vlaning is logical seperation of the existing bandwidth.

We are running 32 vm over 4 host plus got a fifth host coming in September. Servers are doing all sorts SQL, exchange etc.....

 

There isn't a really speed issue as such I was just seeing if I had it all setup alright and I was making use of what we have and seeing about up grades.

 

Maybe it's limiting it from the sans. They have 2 controllers with 2 ports on each. May be I should get another 4 port card to expand iscsi traffic to the host as there only 2 nics one for each San switch.

oh okay, cant really comment on iscsi we are using FC.

 

but I noticed I couldn't leave DPM to sync backups every 15 minutes as it was saturating the hosts fc connection especially on the file servers causing them to hang momentarily every 15 minutes.
