Moving multiple folders

Hi all,

 

I'm looking for a quick way of transfering all our Year 11 & Year 13's home areas from one location to another. So say...

 

\\Server1\d$\users\students\(Individual students)

 

to

 

\\Server2\userbackup\

 

Then I'm wanting to delete all the content from the users folders on \\Server1\d$\users\students\(Individual students) and just leave the folder.

 

What would be the best way of doing this?

Depending on your server OS, you should look at Robocopy. It's a command line tool and I've previously used it to transfer a few hundred GB of staff data from one server to another. Different switched allow you to retain permissions, delete source data after copy, etc, etc...

If I were to use Robocopy would this work...

robocopy <\\Server1\d$\users\students\> <\\Server2\userbackup\> [[John.test; Name.here; name.here2] [/copyall;/purge]

I've just moved 200 gigs worth of user data over to our SAN. What I did was simple, took a full backup and then recovered the data to the new location. The recovery keeps all the NTFS security permissions etc. I Then knocked up two scripts, one which stopped the user shares on the old server and then one which started them again on the SAN.

Been done over a week so far and all looks well [ although I really want to stress test around 150 to 200 users logging on to see what impact it has on the iSCSI SAN ]

So that's another way but as already stated, Robocopy / Xopy / Edumove are both other methods.
