Another My Documents error (Folder Redirection)

I've done a good search (or so I think) to see if anyone else has seen this issue, and I've come out empty handed.

 

Anyways, setup Windows 7 with Man profiles for the students to use this september, this will be our first year on Man profiles and should come as a nice supprise to some of them.

 

Their network home drive (N: maps correctly 100% of the time), "Documents" is set to Basic "Redirect to the users home directory".

 

Funny thing is that the documents 1/3 of the time doesnt redirect, but leaves an error message in the event log of:

 

"Folder redirection policy application has been delayed until the next logon because the group policy logon optimization is in effect."

 

Taking a look at microsoft doesnt really show much for that error other than some references to windows XP fast logon which I havent spotted anywhere. But this doesnt effect the roaming profiles of users, they all seem alright (assuming because once its set its set).

 

Anyone got any ideas, or at least seen this before?

A couple of paragraphs from the W2K8 Active Directory Resource Kit, which I happened to have just read this morning...

 

'To improve logon times, Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista clients [and it seems W7 Clients] are configured to use the Fast Logon Optimization feature. This feature enables asynchronous processing of Group Policy settings for both computer startup and user logon tasks. As a result, users can start up and logon to a computer faster, while Group Policy Settings are applied in the background.

 

Note: You can modify the Fast Logon Optimization setting by using the Group Policy Management console and configuring the ' Always wait for the network at computer startup and Logon' policy setting found under Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Logon.

 

Note: Software installation and Folder Redirection policies only apply during synchronous policy processing. If you have asynchronous processing enabled, these extensions will take two logons to apply the policy settings. The first logon sets the synchronous processing flag, and then the second logon completes the task'

Thankyou , this has corrected the issue and has been tested 100% now.

 

Downside is the logon time is 62seconds now, but I think we can live with that, its never fast enough for some people anyways.

I had a look at this as we seem to be having the same problem but doesnt seem to be working for us.

 

We have Windows 7 Enterprise clients all on a domain and connected to a Windows 2008 AD network but using a 2003 File server for all home areas.

 

We seem to be having a problem with certain clients only that when a user logs in it presents their home directory but they are not able to access it. It comes up with a message saying an error occured. When I run RSOP on the machine it says that folder redirection could not complete this function.

 

I also see lots of error messages on that machine which says it was not able to perform folder redirection on all the file folders e.g. desktop, appdata, movies, music etc

 

It only seems to be affecting our students, If an admin or staff member logs in, the folder redirection works fine. It doesnt work on any student account.

 

I have also tried to clear all the accounts on the workstation and deleting the profiles in the registry by going to regedit, HKLM, microsoft, software, Windows NT, current version, Profile list and deleting any inactive profiles.

 

Can anyone help?
