has any one moved from 07 to 2010 (upgrade) successfully ?

Microsoft appear to have lots of docs on how to upgrade. All methods have advantages and disadvantages. If your 2007 is not particularly well populated it might be the right time to review, learn from mistakes and develop fresh. Remember you will go to 64 bit and 2009r2.

Well we have over 1300 pupils and 200 staff and the VLE is an integral part of the day to day running. So i wanted to know if anyone has ever done a successful migration

hi we are running the upgrades in our test enviroment as our live enviroment consists of 300,000 active users on MOSS 2007

 

what you have to consider is your content database size, SQL server version and your hardware type 64bit for the current or 32bit if your have 32 bit then in place upgrade will not be an option until you migrate your farm from 32bit to 64 bit and windows 2008 r2

 

would also recommed you have your MOSS 2007 on SP2 and run the following first:

 

- preugradecheck STSADM operation

- there is also powershell cmdlet Test -SPContentDatabase that will check both MOSS 2007 and Sharepoint 2010 database to see if they can be upgraded and added to Sharepoint 2010 farm

 

the two upgrade routes offered are inplace and database attach. Each of the two options has further choices for the upgrade.

Upgrade process overview (SharePoint Server 2010)

 

Inplace upgrade allws the Admin / Site owner the ability to switch over to the sharepoint 2010 look and feel from moss 2007 when the organisation is ready. However if you do this and then change your mind, you will no longer see the link as an option in any of the admin configuration pages. The only way to get the link back is by using power shell script from the command line.
