Sims in Classrooms Setup

The school would like sims to be setup in the classrooms for attendance etc. We currently have 2 seperate domains - Admin & Curric on seperate IP address ranges but both on same 255.255.255.0 sub. They both are running seperate DHCPs.

 

To enable me to do this would I have to

 

Loose the DHCP on curric and make the admin server the dhcp for both so 1 network. ?

Keep both as is but set up trusts between the 2 (will this work as long as on same subnet but not IP range)

 

Once that is done how do I go about configuring sims/ AD so that the teachers can then access sims from the admin network on there curric PC's

 

If anyone has done this and can give me some advise it would be much appreciated.

I believe the original two network setup was for security. Things have changed a lot now and as SIMS in the classroom is being encouraged I can no longer see the need for two networks.

We merged ours a while ago, seems like the most sensible thing to do.

It had been setup by previous support people as a VLAN but they left no details of passwords etc and have gone bust so I cannot login to switches to configure/amend anything. If i plug into curric area I will pick up IP from curric server and if I do admin I will pick up from there.

Have you considered combing them into a single network (for example if you mean separate admin/curr domains)?

 

Edit: didn't see the replies, What switches are they, some models/brands can be reset fairly easily without knowing the password.

I want to avoid having to use additional hardware and was hoping to do with trusts and/or making one network but keeping the 2 servers and having static DNS to point to relevant server for desktop redirection etc.....

 

I can set up the trusts etc but not sure how to configure sims on curric

Plug in another NIC, give it a curriculum IP, but no DNS or gateway. Add a static route on that server. Put a DNS record for the server on the curriculum.

 

Copy the setups to a usb pen drive, install SIMS on the curriculum machines you want it on. (SOLUS3 P2 should sort this). Make sure you specify the SQL settings rather then redirecting to S:\sims.

 

Job done. (Assuming your not using SIMS trusted logins).

Most people these days are combing their networks so they are a single domain, in which you can still have multipul servers doing differnt things (eg: some schools have a dedicated sims box) and have the apprioate names pointing to the locations although redoing networks/domains is a fairly large/labour intensive task.

Personally i would reconfigure the network, i dont know of any switch that doenst allow you to reset it so I would reset the switch(es) and reconfigure it.

I did ours by:

Setup routing on a isa server between admin and curric

added the route to workstation

Set domain trusts for admin and curric

Modified the connect.ini on the local machine to find the ip address of the sims server( you will need to point the sims install to the local connect.ini)

 

Have had this up and running for 4 years with no problems.

Thanks for input guys, may well go down the route of resetting Switches they are 3com stackable switches but we also have 3com intellijacks which I presume will need resetting (again no passwords left!!) and putting this all onto a single network but keep seperate servers.

Another vote for a single network, i have previously when resetting up domains just removed the sims server from one domain, and joined it to another - this should make life alot simpler you just need to ensure that there are no other roles on the server (e.g dc, dns, dhcp)
