Ubuntu Help Please.

Happy New Year To All.

 

I'm New To Linux, so,

 

I have download and installed "Ubuntu 6.10"

Set up my proxy settings ok and can get on the internet.

I had a go at downloading the 'Firefox 2' , did that ok.

But then came unstuck,

 

1.. How do I install it. ?. and is it the same principle for other Linux software .

 

2..Are there some web sites for Linux beginners ?.

Hi Mark .

Found my 'updater' and it tells me I need 95 updates, so I have updated Firefox only at the moment to see how to do it.

Looks very useful that tool, Only problem its not updated to Firefox 2,

Should I remove the current F/F, then try to install F/F2 ?.

Edit...I only get half a page showing on the web viewer, How do I expand it ?.

From the two links (thanks Webman for your link) I think I have a lot of reading to do, If I go very wrong I can always re-install as its on a spare machine.

If your using Ubuntu 6.10, just install Firefox in the package management software. You don't need to install it manually yourself.

I did this by first installing the libstdc++5:

 

apt-get install libstdc++5

 

Then:

 

wget -c ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0/linux-i686/en-GB/firefox-2.0.tar.gz

 

In fact, I just found the article where I got my instructions from:

hmm - says in the docs v2 is the default browser in 6.10?? On mine it's still v1.5

That's what mine says !.

 

Had a go with the 'package manager' but I could not see how to upgrade FF ( It was greyed out),

I will have a look at it again later.

Well I sust it out using the above link , I was going wrong by using 'open office' instead of the 'text' editor to copy and paste as a txt file, I think it had some embedded hidden items that confused it.

 

Problem . As a test I have used http://news.bbc.co.uk as my main page, but it only uses 2/3 of the F/F browser page (from the LHS ) Other web sites use the full page .. any idea's why.

AFAIK BBC news is designed for 800x600 viewing - it looks the same in Firefox and IE on my W2k machine at home.

How in Ubuntu do you find your screen size, and change it ?.

 

I'm on a slow learning curve for Linux, but I'm Impress with it.
