With the up coming required migration of SIMS/FMS to SQL I have decided to move them to a new server, trouble is I don't know which one is best so here are my options:

I have 2 spare servers both are blades.

Number 1:

2 x Quad Core Xeon 2.0Ghz

12GB RAM

Total of 8 cores available

Number 2:

2 x Quad Core Xeon 2.27Ghz

8GB RAM

Total of 16 cores available

So which one would be best and will SIMS and FMS install on 64 bit 2008 R2?

Thanks

Either is okay, i would go for the one with the best RAM to give, so the first.

Are you virtualising?

2008 R2 is not supported.

A dual quad with 16 cores, do you mean threads?

Do you know the xeon cpu part number?

i noticed that, but thought i was seeing things!

Yes I mean threads, carried away with typing. E5520 on number 2 and E5504 on number 1.

I'd go with 2, higher cache and faster cpu.

I guess you can't take some of the memory from 1 > 2 ?

I'm not a SIMS expert though so I don't know whether you'd be better with slower cpu but more memory though.

We just got a new fancy blade, deliberately overloaded with extra RAM, with a view to moving it to the other blades, and found out it's incompatible!!! ARGH!

I'd go for RAM but if you can get the processor and move RAM even better.

What other projects do you have in the pipework that might use the other server... If its another SQL service e.g. sharepoint then you may need to rethink unless you will have budget to buy more gear down the road.

Go with #2 and buy some more RAM? Do SIMS support 2008R2 now?

nope, unless something changed all of a sudden with the new summer release, which i don't think it has.

Question... Will you be moving to the full version of SQL? Also, what size are your sql databases at the moment? Also, do you mean the up and coming migration to SQL 2008?

I have purchased the full verson of SQL 2008

SIMS around 3gig FMS less than 1 gig

Yes the up and coming migration :)

Ok, 8GB of RAM in the second one should be plenty for quite some time IMO. I'd go with the second server myself.
