Nah, simpler would be 'I retract my staement that SIMS can be completely mastered in a week' That way you would become credable again.

Sorry vikpaw, but I'm being misquoted here, I never said that, I said 'completely competent within a week', and I have acknowledged that a week was being too optimistic. Sorry, but if you're going to quote me, please, get it right! [/rant]

Have you got the right permissions?

Have you tried another user?

Have you tried another machine?

Does it work on the server?

What version of SIMS are you using?

Have you tried a new user, with only those permissions required?

Have you got admin rights? Can you try it with admin rights?

Let me try it on my data...

Can you send me your data?

A number of flaws spring to mind. When you get answers such as....

What do you mean by machine?

Is the server that big computer we are told not to switch off?

Can someone else get SIMS on my PC?

All real responses.

Has anyone turned or knocked the server off by accident?

No, but we did have a power cut over the the weekend, would that have done it

Priceless!

or the electrician working here might be able to reach the server. What's he doing? Not sure he has turned all the power off and gone into one of the classrooms.

@aerospacemango: just wanted to say, regardless of some of the posts here, don't be put off applying for the job, I'm sure you'll be able to pick it up, even if saying in one week was a bit optimistic and liable to get me shot!

Hi all, I'm back in and astonished at how this thread has gone!

I am deffo applying for the job, as I have a little experience of other MIS stuff, and am quite prepared to state that I have no exp of SIMS, but as I'm sure they'd see from my 2 years in the biz, so far, I can pick stuff up really quickly. (That oughtta do it!!!)

Personally, I'm gonna be using it as a test, to get an idea what is asked at an ICT Managers interview. I don't expect that I shall get anywhere near the position, but I'll keep you all informed ;)

And if there's anyone I've forgotten to thank, for all your invaluable input, let me know!

Good luck.

I think you may get quite abit of competition though, given the number of people looking for work mo.

Ha Ha - Priceless,

I'm putting all of those on an actual flowchart come Monday for everyone who takes calls from Schools (not just to annoy you honest). You wouldn't believe the number of customers (even NM's) who, when asked haven't bothered trying these sorts of things.

NB - Of course there are a large number of highly competent call loggers out there too.

I have to agree with other posts here, you ask simple questions like...

Is the Server switched on,

Is the *:\ drive there,

Can you access the internet,

Have you asked the in school tech,

And people respond to you as though you are speaking an entirely foreign language and this makes YOU an idiot.

I'm just glad I don't have to work in a school all the time, judging by many comments bashing on here you guys don't have it much better.

/possible rant

@OP - Good luck with the interview, let us know what happens

It was a joke :p but semi-serious.

What i was getting at was that sometimes you can try to log a call where you've already tried all those things and are forced to go through them again because they know no other way.

I guess the fact you actually have people that haven't done their own testing like that means it's necessary.

perhaps we should tart it up a bit and make it into a poster.

It's only annoying when you log a call detailing the steps you've taken, and still get asked if you've tried them...

my point exactly, and what really gets my goat is if they insist on seeing your system remotely...

to make it even worse, i've sent in a screenshot already at their request...
