SolidWorks Educational Software

being a specialist engineering school my tech department have decided they want to use this software with no consultation with the Network staff.

 

Can anyone tell me what type of relistic machines that this type of software will run on in a school .

At the monent the specs for the recomended machines are pointing to wards dedicated CAD machines at a grand and a half without the graphics card

 

any help will be appreciated

It pretty much runs on anything, despite what they say. The caveat is that if you need tech support and your card isn't one they list, they'll stick their fingers in their ears and go "we can't hear you" until you change the card.

 

Bear in mind though there's a world of difference between a bunch of kids using it for 50mins at a time with (relatively) basic modelling and a guy churning out fiendishly complicated components.

 

Our Engineering workstations (bought a while ago) are:

 

Dell Optiplex 330

E6750

4GB RAM

Standard SATA drive

Radeon HD2400XT (256MB ram)

 

But Solidworks will happily run on integrated graphics if you're just messing around. It'll also run in a VM.

don't need anything special - standard 3 year old stations with 2GB ram run it ok - installation is a bit of a pain you will need to install the licence on a server with a usb dongle.

Oh the joys of Solidworks! You will need a server which runs the licensing and has to have a usb license key plugged in.

The software has improved recently, make sure you are on the very latest version and make sure you test thotroughly with pupil accounts. It will run on most desktop hardware for hows it's used in schools.

The Installation and Admin guide for the 2010 version is about 100 pages. Happy reading

For the 2010 you don't need a usb dongle it writes the licence to a sector of the hard disk.
