What's the worst that can happen?

We've had mutiple DNS entries with the same IP addresses for some time now and I'm looking at the ageing & scavenging settings to help tidy it up.

 

We have two DHCP servers with DNS on each one. The DHCP lease time is set at 5 days. Would it be best to set the refresh and non refresh to 2 days each?

 

Also I'm a bit paranoid about changing these settings as I'm no DNS expert. I assume the scavenging will not touch anything non-workstation related or does it automatically ignore addresses outside the DHCP scope?

I was under the impression that you could only have one DHCP server on a network, and more that that would result in duplicate IPs being issued.

We are a split site, so this is why it is useful for us.

Not if you use 2 scopes. Read 80/20 Rule

Nope, you can have as many as you like as long as the scopes don't overlap - we have one for 10.nnn.17.xx, one for 10.nnn.18.xx and one for 10.nnn.19.xx - so that if one falls over everyone can still get an IP, amongst other reasons

Ok enough about DHCP's, does anyone know much about how the ageing & scavenging works?

I'm in the process of designing a new network here. We have three DC's so I am planning on setting up a 33/33/33 rule.

 

DC1: x.x.1.1 - 255

DC2: x.x.2.0 - 255

DC3: x.x.3.0 - 255

 

We would never have more than 500 devices so this way we can lose a server and still have enough in our scope to continue leasing them among the two remaining servers.
