Plus there are always techies available at work and I've never met anybody yet who would think twice about going to their nearest techie and asking why they can't connect, at which point they enter the proxy details for them and the job's a good un, no forgotten usernames or passwords to contend with

With heterogeneous environments control at an OS level is a luxury
Pete10141748 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 I agree, I was a bit dissapointed that there was no Proxy setting available on Android. There are ways around it, as was posted earlier in their thread, but they're not as easy as having a simple user interface for it, which yes, really, should be there. It's not like it stops you using the web completely - chances are if you have an Android phone you have an unlimited data transfer deal meaning you can still have all the internet access you want as part of your contract anyway.

It is only very recently when companies started dictating that we can't have certain features because they're not simple enough for Fred the Idiot down the road...

This isn't about desktop machines. It's about windows, mac and linux laptops, ipads, androids, meegoo, meamo, symbian, iPhones, and all those others system I've not mentioned. At the college I'm based at we increasingly expect students to come in with their own kit and we shouldn't discriminating against them just because they choose not to use windows. Likewise we can't directly control those systems and so need to find a way of still providing safe, controlled, internet access 1

Internet filtering in schools nowadays is like banning the use of kitchen knives in the classroom but not preventing bringing your own in from home. (apart from schools who ban phones and enforce the ban stricktly) regards Simon

nile_c Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 This is far from ideal (since it should be in the stock builds) but I've noticed Cyanogen 5.x has a settings menu for adding a proxy. Perhaps one of you G1/ Magic / N1 guys could try that?
