Shuriken1 Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Well granted it's no server activity log, but if it's a matter of confirming if/when this action took place it might help. Was just a thought..
enjay Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Well granted it's no server activity log, but if it's a matter of confirming if/when this action took place it might help. Was just a thought.. It wouldn't confirm if/when a specific action took place, merely than an action had taken place. It would be like me accusing you of stealing my wallet because I could prove you had been in the building on the day it went missing.
pete Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 I'd just like auditing so I can find out who keeps creating duplicate parental contacts in SIMS (rather than using the existing valid contacts), thus making reports unreliable.

You mean you are going to stop them doing it the hard way and make them do it the easy way? You tyrant.
pete Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 You mean you are going to stop them doing it the hard way and make them do it the easy way? You tyrant. I was thinking of ripping their arm off and beating them with the wet end actually. But your approach may work too. *has been running reports in SIMS and investigating why things are missing for the last hour*

It would be like me accusing you of stealing my wallet because I could prove you had been in the building on the day it went missing. Right, so if you found out that I wasn't in the building, it wouldn't absolve me of the crime? I think it would. Given the seeming uncertainty of the original situation, I thought I would make the suggestion just in case the issue could be tackled from a different perspective. I'm sorry if that didn't with your approval.
MattMitchell Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Anything like that would be better run on a copy of the database, attached to a test server. It would, but I've not checked into the implications of backing up and restoring the transaction logs elsewhere. I think (=don't know) that transaction log entries reference physical points within the file structure, which might be changed by an operation like that. Best way is to test it I suppose - any volunteers?

But your approach may work too. *has been running reports in SIMS and investigating why things are missing for the last hour* The psychic interface in SIMS needs a patch. The database should know that someone of a similar name and an almost exactly similar address is the same person that exists already. It's down to a basic lack of understanding of databases.
PEO Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I would be questioning, why does that person have permissions to delete students if he/she is not an attendance officer.
enjay Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Right, so if you found out that I wasn't in the building, it wouldn't absolve me of the crime? I think it would. Of course it would, but applying it back to this situation, it wouldn't help. The school has identified that an entry was in SIMS on Monday but not by Thursday; the teacher under suspicion will naturally have opened SIMS at some point in that 3 day period, so knowing this achieves nothing. I'm sorry if that didn't with your approval. Let's not get stroppy. I'm all for coming at questions from a different perspective, but in this instance the different perspective you suggested wouldn't meet the need. Make a better suggestion and I'll be among the first to approve of it.
enjay Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I would be questioning, why does that person have permissions to delete students if he/she is not an attendance officer. As I understand it, they haven't deleted the student altogether, they've deleted behaviour information recorded against them - which is an area that any teacher would be able to access as part of their job. Maybe a good change request to make would be amending access rights so teachers can add incidents but only Heads of Year and SLT can delete them?
vikpaw Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I can't find the other change request i was thinking of, but have found this one, so we should all go and vote with our clicks: CR-0908-566076: http://support.capitaes.co.uk/ChangeRequest/DetailChangeRequest.aspx?Status=Vote&Score=2&id=%c3%98%c3%99%c3%92%c3%97%c3%a8%c3%a4%c3%8f%c3%9e%c3%a8%c3%9d%c3%93 This related permission for detentions is also relevant CR-0903-491260: http://support.capitaes.co.uk/ChangeRequest/DetailChangeRequest.aspx?Status=Vote&Score=2&id=%c3%98%c3%99%c3%92%c3%9c%c3%a8%c3%a5%c3%8c%c3%a3%c3%a6%c3%9e%c3%99 If you're interested see this forum discussion topic id #22061 and KB article #38066

Given the seeming uncertainty of the original situation, I thought I would make the suggestion just in case the issue could be tackled from a different perspective. I'm sorry if that didn't with your approval. The original intent seemed to be driven more in terms of "can we prove they did it?", so although proving that someone hadn't deleted the records would prove they're innocent, I'd bet money the school wanted to gather evidence to support a dismissal for gross misconduct. Personally, in order to prove it either way, I'd want to see the records that were deleted, as, without full docs on how SIMS interacts with the database, deleting records per se may not be evidence of anything inappropriate anyway.
vikpaw Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 cheers jinnantonnix - in my head while reading that i could hear the theme tune from 'mighty mouse' so, i do have transaction logs every few hours, and am going to increase the frequency. i've read elsewhere that the whole point is that you play them back onto a full backup, that's in full backup mode. is that any use in this case? could it show that someone viewed a record, just before the delete transaction?
vikpaw Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 I mean i've got sql management studio doing a transaction log backup that creates a .trn file every few hours, its a legacy i inherited and kept going. is that not what i need? oh boy!
vikpaw Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Like YEAH - daily .bak which i every now and again restore to a test server.
