iPod Touch - buy one now or wait?

My old 60GB iPod photo has totally given up the ghost now, so I need another. I want either a 32GB or 64GB iPod Touch (no interest in an iPhone).

But should I get one now, or is Apple likely to introduce an updated model this year (so the prices of the old ones would drop)

 

Also, noticed on ebay lots of sellers selling the 64GB for around £220, as returned units with some warranty left. Apart from the reduced warranty, is there any real reason to be wary of these? Its just a pretty decent discount over Apple's £306

if your fone contract's due you could do what I did and get one free on a contract? I used affordablemobiles.co.uk which meant I didn't have to buy one. Admittedly now I wish I'd got an iphone, but I assumed that a smartphone+ipod touch=iphone, and with my clumsy tendancies at least I don't lose both. But I shall be getting the iphone 4...

Let's face it, it's an Apple product, the price sin't going to drop that much even if they do release a newer model!

You can always wait for "the new model" but at some point you just gotta buy what it is you want.

In general the iPods are pretty much bullet proof now they have moved away from mechanical storage. I would wait until the iPhone 4 dust settles and see what the new touch is like and decide if its worth stumping up for the new version or stick with a heavily reduced older but identical in almost every way but looks different version.

 

Did that make sense?

Oh I certainly wont be buying a newer model whatever they put in it, was just hoping it would cause a load of people to upgrade and sell their current ones

I'd be happy to wait a while but till September seems a long time away, I'm missing not having an ipod!

The iPod touch is probably the only Apple Product I like. I have the 64GB version and have had no problems at all. It just does what it does. I replaced the standard headphones though as the Apple ones are total rubbish.

I think it may have been the 32gb model not sure as hes not in today but it was only last weekend, might have been an instore deal?

alan - bought some sennheisers last week for exactly that reason. Such a difference from the standard ones! (I have a shuffle as well)

I've been looking at this too, but I dont want to pay more than £150 so was looking at the 8GB version. When the new ones come out is there actually going to be any real difference between the newer versions and existing ones? I read somewhere that they will be incorporating a camera into the new ones but to be honest, I dont want/need a camera.

 

What I'mi after is an MP3 player and something close to a PDA with wireless and thought that the iPod touch seemed like a good choice, anyone got any other recommendations. So how do you guys find the iPod touch? Recommended?

Of course it will, its 2nd generation where as 32/64 are 3rd Gen - so slower cpu/cpu, less RAM and thats about it really.

I was reading somewhere else when they were compared to the iPhone and how older versions were no longer supported. Sounded a little bit strange to me, but then I know next to nothing about Apple products as you can see I just wanted to make sure before I purchased anything. ta

The original iPhone no longer gets updated when the new version of the OS is released, which is to be expected really. As the demands of the OS increase the hardware cant be updated to cope with it.

I wouldnt buy the 8GB version personally, even if I only wanted 8GB storage, purely because of the older hardware

THats what I was trying to find out. What is the difference between the 8GB and 32GB? I take it more than just the capacity then? It runs using older components?

Its a generation behind hardware wise. The 32 and 64 were released last year, the 8 is unchanged from whenever it first came out (2008?)

 

From a quick look, the 3rd gen have double the RAM, a quicker CPU, and a different (I assume better) GPU than the 2nd gen (which the 8GB is)

Aha, can you link where you got that info from please? I noticed that the 8GB had released Sept 09 listed next to it, but presumably this is the software update not the hardware then? Dont think I can afford the price of the 32GB and dont really want to end up with something not as good so I might have to look at alternatives again

Out of interest has anyone tried the X series of Sony Walkman? I was given one (X1050) as a present and I think the sound quality knocks spots off an iPod, even an iPod that uses better headphones than the standard ones that come with it. My 21 yr old daughter who is an iPod freak agreed that the Sony sounded far better. I'm not trying to hijack the thread, just curious about it.
