We have several of the free standing large air-conditioning units on site, one of which is used in the server room.

It's started to smell like old socks and I've a suspicion it's never been properly serviced at all. Isn't there a legal requirement to do so (to prevent the risk of legionnaire's, etc.)?

Count yourself lucky, ours smell like teachers.

Back to the topic........!

I don't have mine serviced like I do my fixed units, but what I would suggest is you follow the owners guide that tells you to empty the water tanks on them etc as that can build up nicely and cause dodgy smells, and if its got filters give them a good clean as well :) If your AC engineers are friendly chaps perhaps ask them to give it a once over as a favour for a good brew and cake ;)

Could try spraying some AC cleaner onto the cooling coils? I know there is something around you can get for car AC systems but it's surely the same principle? That'll be the smell though!

I've been looking at a floor-standing AC unit for our second server cupboard. Seemingly the thing to get is a condensate pump that will automatically empty the water tank for you when it gets full to a certain level. You can get them off eBay.
