Strange beeping from speakers (laptop)

I have a laptop (Acer Aspire 5670) which is connected to a set of 2.1 speakers via the only possible connection (which is a black SPDIF port) but there is a strange recurring beeping sound which I can hear. It's difficult to describe so I did my best too record it (listen to it loud and you can hear it) It's really annoying, especially with headphones on. Can anyone help me to get rid of it? Do I just need a new soundcard? Thanks in advance.

Only kidding... I have had a similar problem with Acer laptops in the past (cannot remember the model number). In the case of mine, the speaker connection was using a regular phono socket and was only evident when the machines were plugged into the mains. I put it down to a poorly designed motherboard and interfence from the recharge circuitry.

 

I know that this doesn't really help but it gives you something to try to narrow down the problem (although this shouldn't be possible with a digital connection like you are using).

That would be my guess / thoughts too - sound can suck when on mains unfortunately with a analog connection... though mine doesnt

 

Just wish i had bought the right cable for optical output [have a combi port on mine that feeds mini jack output or digital out] as i bought a TOS cable - thinking it was the right one. Works for the DVD recorder though - although not using it really yet [until i get phono > phone for my crappy Sky box].
