[windows software] SQL Server CALS

Hello,

 

Could anyone tell me whether I need to purchase CALS for a new HR package that we are having installed. We have a new HR database that is using SQL from my understanding each user that will be accessing the database will need a CAL which would be the whole college some 700+ users but I've been informed by the supplier of the software that we actually don't need them can anyone confirm either way.

We've got SQL Enterprise 2008 sat on a Windows 2008 Std server we'd have to buy under our select as our campus doesn't include SQL

Also depends on who you talk to and their own interpretation. Even MS's own documentation is contradictory, just make sure you have a version that backs up your own situation.

but did you buy enterprise with a proc licence or a standard licence.

 

For the proc licence you will need a licence for each of the physical procs on the server, and do not need CALS.

This seems to be where we've gone wrong then as we've just used a normal licence hence we're now looking at a large bill. Will see whether I can get the licenced changed before we go live. Thanks

We have the SQL 1 processor license on our agreement and is about £260 ish

That is not a bad price, can i ask which version of sql server is that you have.

Its for either 2005 or 2008, its part of the schools agreement. I just have SQL Standard on the agreement and i am covered for 2005, 2008 and R2, but like it said, its part of the schools agreement so we have to pay it ever year.
