farquea Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I have recently become IT Manager and all our Dell server warranty is up this year. I've spoken with Dell and they have sent me through a quote of the cost to renew everything for 1 year and it comes to a staggering £11,000! Now we have had a couple hard drives fail in the past year and replaced but definitely not 11 grands worth! So i was wondering if anyone could suggest an alternative as the school will want to know what we have in place instead as i'd be a bit worried of our SAN failing or a DC going down which is a bit more serious than a failed hard drive.
FN-GM Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 11 grand must be a mistake. You could buy a new server with 5 year warrenty easily for that.
Haptic Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 (edited) we will happily offer you a comparison quote for the warranty , we are dell resellers and usualy can make you some fantastic savings against dell themselves, [email protected] Edited June 14, 2012 by Dos_Box
localzuk Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I'm guessing that quote isn't for a single server? How old are the machines? After about 4 years, warranty prices will shoot up, as availability of the older components will be lower and therefore they'll cost more to source for the warranty provider.
farquea Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 it includes 10 servers, SAN, Tape drives and the PowerVault backup server we have is £1300!

farquea Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 everything except 2 servers were bought in 2007. the 2 servers were bought in 2005
localzuk Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 everything except 2 servers were bought in 2007. the 2 servers were bought in 2005 To be brutally honest, that price for a 1 year warranty on that many devices, all being 3 years or more old is not that bad IMO. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the extended warranty, instead sourcing the parts if things break, and scheduling the replacement of all that equipment over the next year or 2.
zag Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I don't see why anyone bothers with warranties on servers. Just buy a load of spare parts and a couple of "shadow" machines with the same spec as live ones. I would much rather repair stuff myself than trust some no name engineer to do it.
richardp Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 All I can say is that if you have no warranty on your Dell hardware if you need their help you will find it hard to get it without signing a blank cheque. I needed a replacement raid card for a poweredge2850 last year and just wanted them to answer a question about a long scsi cable, spent 45mins on the phone being passed from person to person to finally be told that as I had no warranty and was not an enterprise customer they would not answer my question!!! SYNACK Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I don't see why anyone bothers with warranties on servers. Because warrenties are vastly cheaper than buying two complete backup machines and give better protection.
wesleyw Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Call CCS Media ask for a guy named Jonathon Buxton he'll quote you for warranties for those servers they won't be with Dell directly but they'll be with a partner. Old Birdholme House, Derby Road Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S40 2EX, t: 01246 200 200, I'm looking to use them for me older Dell boxes that have just run out of warranty. Wes
