Schools Using Twitter

Our marketing person is considering using Twitter to update parents (and others) about events and such like, and I know some schools are already doing this. If your school is already on Twitter, could you post your address on here so we could have a look at the kind of tweets you're making to help us get a flavour of how it is being used and whether we do want to go down that road ourselves.

Our feed is cleared down on regular basis, so you won't see much back-advertising of events on it.

 

While we don't have many "followers", they're only the ones with twitter accounts.

Many parents have bookmarked the page and simply check it.

 

It came into it's own during the snow, when most parents seemed to know whether or not we were open from twitter, not parentmail!

 

The feed has also been picked up by the local paper

Saves them having to understand the whole Twitter thing.

I've also PM'd with our twitter feed. I have embedded our feed directly into the school website, so it is brilliant for quick snippets of news. Tweet! Put Twitter on your site with this simple, unobtrusive jQuery widget this is the script i used, allowed my to style it to not be too obviously twittery!

 

Like elsiegee said it was excellent when it snowed. I would recommend having a few people with responsibility for adding tweets, it has been a bit of a burden coming up with things myself every day.

As for the day-to-day of tweeting, that wouldn't be me at all, but our marketing person - I'm just fact-finding for them. Nice!

I use it personally for work purposes, connects me to educators and IT people all over the country and some around the world.

 

We also use it as a School, mainly to publicise news which is on the Website and job advertisements etc. @bradfordacademy

Also remember that through things like twitter feed it can automatically tweet out the latest blog posts / news item it can find on a provided RSS feed. It is how I automatically tweet about my blog posts.

We had a school twitter account, but a directive from the Head of the LA CYPS team said no school should utilise social networking sites such as twitter and facebook. We found it a fantastic way to publicise school awards, sports results, school closures etc and worked really well with our School Website.

 

Something we don't agree with but we have of course removed our accounts
