mice not working in suite

We have a suite of dell gx620 USFF pcs. A small number of them are having problems with their mice stop working. If you re-boot they work again.

 

There is no connection issues as they work some of the time.

We secure the backs so kids can't unplug cables.

They are original dell suplied optical mice.

 

They run win xp pro xp3. The image is good, not to cluttered with old software etc.

I have alot of gx620's around the school, yet its only these ones that suffer from it.

 

What could cause this????

I dont think so. When i have been up there i have to reboot.

Might sound like a daft question but; what colour is the desk that they are on? Do you use mouse mats?

Not a daft question at all, I've know mice have issues with rough, smooth, shiny, matt and any other surface you can think of!

They are rough surface desk that are yellowy brown colour.

 

Could it be there age?

Unlikely if they work on a reboot. Also desk problems make them temperamental, rather than completely non-functional. To check if the desk surface is the problem try putting an upside-down mouse mat (pref black) under a mouse then moving the mouse - if it suddenly works ok then change the desks or find a mouse mat which works & buy one for every PC.

 

Otherwise, if the problem only just started, then maybe a driver update is the cause? Try removing the mouse from Hardware completely then reinstalling/redetecting/changing driver.

We recently bought some USB mice and keyboards from ebuyer, both different brands, we had the same problem you are having when they were both plugged in together. Plugged in individually they worked perfectly. There was a strange driver conflict.

 

I sorted it by disabling one of the several "HID-complient-XXX" devices in device manager. Both then worked together fine.

This is a strange question but I’ve been told it by someone (never paid much attention to it) on the back of a gx620 are the mice plugged in the USB sockets under the nic socket? because they I was told that sometimes if they aren’t they don’t always work properly. I’ve never seen this but in IT anything can happen that what I’ve learnt in the last 5 years
