AntiThesis Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 So, it's nearly upon us. Speaking as someone from the host country, we're very excited Are there any Edugeeks who will be flying in to watch a game or two in our lovely country?
steve Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I'll be there from 10th June for a month Basing myself near J'burg, with trips to Cape Town and PE
glennda Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 who needs football? we have already won one world cup this year!
AntiThesis Posted May 18, 2010 Author Posted May 18, 2010 We're hosting it so it's called Soccer Nice to hear Steve - have you ever travelled here before? PE is quite close to us (around 3 hours) - we maaay make it up for a game there depending on how much support I can drum up from the locals.

AntiThesis Posted May 18, 2010 Author Posted May 18, 2010 Shhh. We don't like to mention the Cricket World Cup. SA has been irritatingly banished a number of times now and it's starting to hurt.
Gatt Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Football?? would rather jab needles into my eyeballs:bored: 1
AyatollahPies Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Football?? would rather jab needles into my eyeballs:bored: Enjoy your month long shopping trip with the Mrs then. ;-)
Gatt Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Enjoy your month long shopping trip with the Mrs then. ;-) Thats what the internet's for besides we're not ones for walking aimlessly round shops... would rather spend the month or so playing and having fun with my son & Mrs Gatt
cookie_monster Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Football?? would rather jab needles into my eyeballs:bored: They've scheduled something will smaller yellow balls for people like you @ AntiThesis - I wish I was going over but I'll have to make do with the sofa and of course the pub 1
steve Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Nice to hear Steve - have you ever travelled here before? PE is quite close to us (around 3 hours) - we maaay make it up for a game there depending on how much support I can drum up from the locals. Its my first venture in to South Africa. Looking forward to it! Any recomendations of places to visit in PE?
Hightower Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Any country that calls it 'soccer' should not be allowed to host it. Bring on 2018 when the World Cup comes home. I think the way the draw was made this World Cup was a farce - an absolute disgrace. That said, I think it should prove to be a good World Cup, with some of the 'better' teams sturggling (Argentina), and I think England have a real chance!
dave.81 Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Sadly wont be flying out to watch any of the Football World Cup but will be squeezing in as many matches at home as possible before the other half starts to complain.
Gatt Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Already blocking anything containing "Football" and "World Cup" for the pupils Yes I am evil, but they are not here to keep up with the latest footie results and goings on - they are here to learn...
Hightower Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Already blocking anything containing "Football" and "World Cup" for the pupils Yes I am evil, but they are not here to keep up with the latest footie results and goings on - they are here to learn... And you are surely there to work, yet here you are posting up complaints about the World Cup. Oh, the irony =)
kevbaz Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Already blocking anything containing "Football" and "World Cup" for the pupils Yes I am evil, but they are not here to keep up with the latest footie results and goings on - they are here to learn... Bit harsh that isnt it? we embrace it here and use it as a learning oppotuinity
copson90 Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Ordered sky+ HD last week so it'll be with me in time for the world cup, lovely jubbly.
SteveBentley Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 We're hosting it so it's called Soccer Yeah but we invented it, so it's called Football
kevbaz Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 thats what freesat had is for bbc hd and itvhd, is sky allowed to broadcvast itvhd now?
Hightower Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 thats what freesat had is for bbc hd and itvhd, is sky allowed to broadcvast itvhd now? Who needs to pay for a sat dish - my area released FreeView HD in February. Bought my box and all ready for the World Cup! Once it is finished will probably move FreeView HD box upstairs and get Sky HD ordered for the new football season.
Gatt Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 And you are surely there to work, yet here you are posting up complaints about the World Cup. Oh, the irony =) Not really, lull before the storm (in about 5 mins when P1 starts...) so just having a brew and psyching myself up for a day of toner changes (including clothing as they are the new "exploding OKI" toners..) Bit harsh that isnt it? we embrace it here and use it as a learning oppotuinity The are going to be allowed to watch stuff at certain times and in certain places, but at no other times, staff have the right to implement the Temporary Bypass feature on SchoolGuardian if needed for coursework. In fact some teachers have started trying to create coursework around the world cup and I am working with them to ensure that this can be acehvied....
SteveBentley Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 is sky allowed to broadcvast itvhd now? ITV HD is available through Sky - not sure Sky themselves had much to do with it though
Hightower Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 In fact some teachers have started trying to create coursework around the world cup and I am working with them to ensure that this can be acehvied.... Ah, so you aren't really blocking anything with Football & World Cup - I think you secretly have a love for the sport, but are trying to prove otherwise.
cookie_monster Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Bring on 2018 when the World Cup comes home. Ha you'll be lucky after Lord Whatshisface stuck his size 12s in it, what a prat that's what you get when you involve a upper class plonker get involved in something he's probably not even that bothered about.
