Connecting PC to TV Via HDMI

I have recently bought a dvi to HDMI cable in order to plug my pc into my Plasma screen tv... however when i plug it in an error comes up on my tv saying video not supported. i have changed the resolution on the pc by connecting it to a moniter via VGA but no luck... any ideas?

plug it in for bootup and it should detect a usable res if not something like a few qres scripts with hotkeys assigned to them so ctrl-alt-q is 800x600 etc
