Well were trying to run backups on our admin server the past 4 backups keep failing. They ask for new media to be inserted when it attempts to mount the D: drive. However, the tape is not full when they ask for new media. We are recieveing this error code if it helps

 

Media mount failed.

User canceled a Physical Volume Library operation.

 

V-79-57344-33861 - The media operation was terminated by the user.

 

The job cancels at the maximum run time.

You say the tape isn't full - do you mean it hasn't reached the maximum possible eg. You have an LTO2 tape but the backup isn't 400GB or it hasn't reached the minimum eg 200GB for an LTO2?

its a dat72 tape and im saying that the data backing up isnt reaching 72GB average is 50GB

DAT72 can theoretically backup 72GB of data but there are no guarantees. It will do 36GB native but anything thereafter depends on the compression rates of your software and hardware so it sounds as though your tape / drive combination has reached its maximum capacity. What compression type have you set in BE - all of my backups are set to Hardware if available, otherwise software.

Successful compression can increase the tape drive's data transfer rate up to twice the native rate. Some tape drives use the Lempel-Ziv (LZ1) compression algorithm for its superior versatility and efficiency. Compression can be highly variable depending on your input data. Compression algorithms look for repeatable data patterns that can be compacted.

 

Image files from a graphical program like Microsoft Paint, may compress at 4.5:1 or more, while binary files may compress at just 1.5:1. Data that has already been compressed or random data (such as encrypted data or MPEG files) may actually expand by about five percent if you attempt to compress it further. This can reduce drive throughput.
