As I understand it we need to upgrade Sims to SQL 2008 this year

 

As of 1st May SQL 2008 R2 becomes available together with a 15% price increase

 

Is there any advantage in having R2 for Sims?

We haven't tested on R2 yet so it isn't supported. You can buy R2 and downgrade under MS's licencing.

I've just run off the info. sheet for upgrading from 2005 to 2008. It says that the express version is free but no longer suitable for High Schools and Middle Schools with a large number of SIMS users and workstations. We currently have 3 workstations using SIMS all of the time and 4 intermittent but the plan is to put SIMS into every classroom, so that will be an additional 20 odd users but again intermittent.

 

Should we be considering purchasing the SQL 2008 standard version or will we be ok with express?

@laserblazer - Express will run it (unless your DB is bigger than 4GB) but may slow down under the additional user load as it is limited to 1GB of cache memory and one CPU core. The upgrade from 2008 express to standard can be done in place and is realitivly easy so I would suggest starting out with express and only purchasing and upgrading if nessisary.

@THERADIOTELETUBBY - I would try to get the latest version then use downgrade rights as has been suggested, from what I have heard on this forum about SIMS eventually they will require the R2 version and that extra 15% now may save you the cost of a full upgrade in future.

Has anyone tried SIMS on SQL 2008 std R2 32 bit with a single named instance. I hear its pretty stable generally - after all it's not a major release. I'm still on Win2003 as when I switched to SIMS Win2008 hadn't been OK'ed by Capita which was annoying.

I've had a number of bugs with SQL 2008 R2, remember, you can't restore back to SQL 2008 R1 either. It's not like Windows.

 

I would SQL 2008 Express for now, it's really easy to upgrade to standard.
