Word 2007 line spacing: How do I deply via GPO?

Hi guys,

 

Rolled out Office 2007 across the network via GPO last week. I've only just realised the line spacing issue (why would MS do that?). I know how to manually change the 'Style' to reflect 2003 - but how do I deploy that via GPO?

 

Thanks in advance - I did try searching on here but found nothing. Am I the only wally - or are others not that fussed?

Personally, I like it - it forces people to finally learn the difference between line breaks and paragraph breaks. However, I fully recognise I am a pedantic git.

 

For the few staff who have asked how to switch back (and by few, I mean 2 out of a staff of 90), I showed them both how to change back manually, and how to put in a line break (Shift+Enter).

 

If you wanted to change it en-masse, I would suggest rolling out a customised normal.dotm, either using a logon script or Group Policy Preferences.

Its not really a straight answer to your question but if you cant find a fix, you could send a polite email round saying, if you hold shift and press enter it will drop to the next line rather than skipping a line.

Thanks guys. I just know one particular teacher will mention it. I'll just let all know if they don't like it how it is, simply click on the Home ribbon, then Styles and select 2003 style.

Sometimes I wish I had a big screen on the wall of my office that would sound a ruddy great alarm whenever someone says something utterly predictable and/or stupid, in the style of QI's "General Ignorance" round.

Users can also select the Word 2003 style which sets it back to the old default settings and spacing.

I shall change our normal file for the next deployment instead.

Worth pointing out that pressing Shift Enter will give weird effects if you're doing justified text - it forces a new line, not a new paragraph, so the previous line will be justified - typically adding far too much space.

 

I don't think there's an easy way of changing the styles in existing documents but if you don't like using a properly configured style sheet (yes, I agree with Angrytechnician) then I'd guess you can push out an updated template which would make the change for new documents.

This issue drives me up the wall as it is entirely user based. I get certain small number of (1 -2)teachers demanding that it be changed for the whole school because they don't like it. What right do they have to dictate that the rest of the school learn and force dealing with an outdated way of doing layout by treating a word processer as a typewriter.

 

Training and rehabilitation of badly trained users is the answer in my opinion.

Must admit I came across this as well a few users saying its not correct based on how they were taught layout at typewriter and secretarial college back 30+ years ago, I like the new spacing as it makes letters much clearer to read I find, we also had it over the font, I like Calibri its a nice clear crisp font so nice to read for many people but oh no we like Times which seems to be starting to vanish (at last!) from many things.

I've just spent 20 minutes sorting out a table of contents for one of our students who, on discovering that a return dropped down two lines, found a creative alternative to shift-return... keep pressing space until you end up on the next line
