Spam, what eats yours?

Just wondering what you guys are using and what kind of blocking numbers you are getting. Staff are complaining that they maybe receive one or two a day (which is f'ing AWSOME).

We have PureMessage here and it seems to pick up about 90% of spam which is okay, and it seems quite cheap too.

Spamassassin. Blocking 95% of mail as spam. Being a heavy email user, I get maybe one or two a day. Looking at the stats, most staff get one or two a week.

Geoff, quick question, do your staff sign up for every newsletter under the sun as well as putting there email addresses on the site as well as posting of newsgroups with it?

Some do, some don't. My email is fairly well known in comparison, which is why I get more spam.

We (SmoothWall) have *just* released an anti-spam tool. It is not a repackaged Open Source component, rather an off-the-shelf spam blocking API. We are yet to get any customer feedback (obviously), and this won't be available to schoolguardian users until BETT (and SchG5), but if any of you guys would like a go, give me a shout

 

Geoff- I use spamassassin at home (still) but havent changed anything or trained it in ages. I find it about 50% effective. How much work do you put in to keeping things up to date? Do you train the thing at all?

Well, at work, the e-mail is provided by County and they seem to do a pretty good job of spam filtering.

 

Home, however, is a different story. I am fighting a losing battle with SpamBayes (fully trained), Outlook 2003 junk mail filter and ISP filtering at the second to highest level (highest level deletes proper mail too). Still getting perhaps 8-10 spams in the Inbox each day.

 

Does anyone manage not to get those damned 'stock quote' spams? They are the bane of my life and nothing seems to catch them.

Yes I train it, I have a two email address setup for myself called user-ham@domain and user-spam@domain. I just forward email to each one depending on if it's spam or ham. A perl script then collects all the mail up from these two mail boxes nightly and submits them to the spam assasin training mechanism.

 

Secondly, I also use the Razor2 and Pyzor distributed spam detection networks. There are plugins for Spam Assassin.

Puremessage for me at work, with the Exchagne Intellignet Mail Filter, very good combination, must get about 80% sorted, still lets some through, for some heavy spam receives such as the main office account, I just wack on some opensource spam software, and that deals with it. At home I use Spambayes and Mailwasher Pro and they do a good job.

Spamassassin on my dedicated server VPS which, with a score of 5.0 cuts out 95% of the crap straight away...

 

Next up is outlook2003's own email filter which seems to do a good job..

 

In truth I've gone from 2,000 spams a day (on 10 email accounts I should add) to just under 5 (yes five) so I can deal with that..

In Lancashre we have setup a (large) Spam Assasin box. Schools can opt into the service (for free) and all of their spam is tagged as such and diverted to an account called [email protected]

i must be doing something wrong

we have 6000+ students all with exchange accounts

using gfi mail essentials 12, and its not working very well :x

most people get around 7 or 8 spam emails a day that are not marked [sPAM]

we only block 100% certain spam, rest is upto recipient to sort out

is this what you guys do?

I have now started to block any suspected SPF forged emails as well, which has helped,

I really want to get spamassasin set up but does anyone know of a gui for it, found it hard to police being a mainly windows guy
