i have a laptop for a member of staff. We have being giving staff limited account access so that they cant install any old stuff on their laptops. As they very rarely use them in school the laptops are not on the domain.

I want to grant a user admin access on one folder in Program Files so that they can run the program but the security tab you get on domain computers doesnt appear.

Is there anyway of setting this up?

This setting in the Folders control panel applet is the one you want to change.

You can do this with XP Pro, but not XP home or media (the security tab, I mean)

O.o I've never used Home or Media versions of XP, so I'll take your word for it but I have to say that I think that it's insane that Microsoft felt it necessary to remove that option!

You can enable the security tab using this method:

Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy

Local Policies->Security Options->

Set 'Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts' to 'Classic'

Is the Local Security Policy even enabled in Windows XP Home AXE? I don't remember it being there, although I haven't touched Windows XP Home in quite some time. The only way I know of in Windows XP Home is to restart the computer and boot into safe mode. The security tab is shown if you log into an administrator account via safe mode in Windows XP Home.
