GrumbleDook Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 There are only a few ports I can't use in the office and this covers them ... so no IRC for me. Then again ... I dropped my IRC addiction a few years ago too (irc.lspace.org)

powdarrmonkey Posted April 12, 2010 Author Posted April 12, 2010 As a lot of members will be back for the first time today, and since Ignite is still out for the count: *bump*
Arcath Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 added to my irssi screen this does raise a point why doesnt edugeek have an official 24/7 irc channel?
localzuk Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 added to my irssi screen this does raise a point why doesnt edugeek have an official 24/7 irc channel? Because IRC is a) out of date now, b) is blocked by most RBC's and c) because it usually has a Jabber server instead.
Arcath Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 a) IRC is far from out of date, its still being developed and is brilliant piece of software. b) Im sure Edugeek could run on a non standard port that we can get through to from inside an RBC, plus they could have a web based irc client available here. c) Jabber? XMPP now, would that work? does it allow IRC style channels?
localzuk Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 c) Jabber? XMPP now, would that work? does it allow IRC style channels? Yes, you have 'rooms' on an XMPP server.
Haptic Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 well im all signed up god its been ages since I used Irc lol
powdarrmonkey Posted April 12, 2010 Author Posted April 12, 2010 c) Jabber? XMPP now, would that work? does it allow IRC style channels? Official EduGeek chat is an Ignite XMPP server, it's just broken for now.
powdarrmonkey Posted April 12, 2010 Author Posted April 12, 2010 Because IRC is a) out of date now, b) is blocked by most RBC's and c) because it usually has a Jabber server instead. IRC isn't out of date any more than SMTP is. It's still an extremely light protocol, it scales well in most circumstances and it's an open, RFC-based standard, something lacking in a lot of chat protocols lately.
localzuk Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Edugeek has a XMPP server? Usually, yes. It is offline whilst the new site beds in though AFAIK.
Little-Miss Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Will someone help me get some sort of IRC client working lol! XCHAT is saying Connection failed. Error: No route to host...
