Because IRC is a) out of date now, b) is blocked by most RBC's and c) because it usually has a Jabber server instead.

a) IRC is far from out of date, its still being developed and is brilliant piece of software.

 

b) Im sure Edugeek could run on a non standard port that we can get through to from inside an RBC, plus they could have a web based irc client available here.

Yes, you have 'rooms' on an XMPP server.

Official EduGeek chat is an Ignite XMPP server, it's just broken for now.

IRC isn't out of date any more than SMTP is. It's still an extremely light protocol, it scales well in most circumstances and it's an open, RFC-based standard, something lacking in a lot of chat protocols lately.
