Geoff Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 WoW using an anticheat system called 'The Warden' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Warden_%28software%29 However, most 'professional' cheaters (read chinese gold farmers) use another PC on the same lan to intercept and modify data traffic going between the client and the server. Something The Warden is incapable of catching.
bossman Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 if ya gotta cheat to play the game well the game ain't worth playing
Disease Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 Blizzard have banned all linux users as the game is only licenced to be used on windows. Massive post on the offical forums about it. A dev said if you use Linux to play wow you will get banned.

A dev said if you use Linux to play wow you will get banned. The EULA actually states you're not allowed to use '3rd party software'. I'm not sure if an entire OS stack counts. Anyway how about a link to that forum post? Transgaming say they are working with Blizzard engineers to fix the issue and identify any accounts that have been mistakenly banned because of Cedega. Here's my link. http://transgaming.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7197&start=120&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=
Disease Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 it's not an OS stack issue Geoff in order for you to run wow which is a windows application in Linux you have to run it in an emulator which is a 3rd party program. The game was written by BLizzard for Windows it says windows on the box and not Linux via 3rd party emulator on the requirements on the box, so BLizzard are right.
StewartKnight Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 What I read was..... "WoW forces 400,00 people to GET A LIFE"

Did WinXP 64Bit users get banned too then? Because the 32bit environment in WinXP64 is emulated.

Link? you are the one quoting the EULA, is WINE and CEDEGAR not 3rd party programs then? or does WOW run after a normal install on Linux, does it even install?
Jake Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 *gets sad cause he is the only one who thinks WoW roxxors, and goes to sit in the corner*
Geoff Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 * Geoff pyroblasts Jake for 9000 damage. WINE and CEDEGAR not 3rd party programs then Wine is a Linux compatibility library that implements the Win16 & Win32 API. Cedega is a Linux compatibility library that implements everything Wine has plus the DirectX 9 APIs. So no, they aren't programs. WOW run after a normal install on Linux, does it even install? Early versions of Cedega had trouble running the setup.exe from the CD. You could avoid the problem by copying the CD contents to the hard drive and installing that way. If you installed from the downloadable setup for a trial account that worked fine of course. Current versions of Cedega have no installation problems.
Jake Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 *Penguin bites Jake for 110567 damage. Jake Dies.
Disease Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 Can you install and run wow on Linux without running Wine or any similar program? No, then it is against the EULA.
Geoff Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Depends on the distro. Some come with wine/cedega demo version. Other distros will ask you if you want to install them when you try and run a .exe and install them from the online repository. BTW, WinXP doesn't come with DirectX9. So you can't play WoW on that out of the box either.
Disease Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 Wow comes with Direct X as do most games so therefore they are approved, do they come with WINE or the other?
NetworkGeezer Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Gosh disease. You really hate Linux. Well I guess the site needed an anti-Geoff for balance
CyberNerd Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Bizzard are working on this. Seems they don't have prejudice to linux, wine or Cedga. More trolling from disease.... http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=47009071&pageNo=3&sid=1#40 We have been testing our security software with Cedega. Cedega was used and tested before the security procedures and during the security procedures. From this testing we have yielded no hits, meaning Cedega, by itself, does not incur an account suspension. We have accounts of several Cedega users who have been playing normally during the time that these processes are running. Again, these people are not being suspended simply because of using Cedega or Linux. We are in contact with the people at Cedega and following up with them regarding individual accounts. To answer the OP's question, no it is not against the ToS to use Linux or Cedega. We continue to monitor the situation to prevent cases of false positives and to rectify them if they do occur. Disease Posted November 17, 2006 Author Posted November 17, 2006 Gosh disease. You really hate Linux. Well I guess the site needed an anti-Geoff for balance Not really, I have a Linux machine running Kubuntu at home. At least I have a vague semblance of evidence to back up what I'm on about. Yes Geoff, *Wierd music starts* *Disease's mind carries him back to when Geoff said MS Borked it's implementation of DHCP* *Weird Music starts* More trolling from disease.... There is a difference in Trolling and Argueing about a point. WOW DID ban Linux users, for using Cedega or whatever it is called, I am stating a point not trolling. Using a 3rd party program IS against the EULA, read it, it's there. Geoff tried to claim that Windows users should be banned as Direct X 9 did not come with xp, no, but it is provided on the disk by Blizzard, and Geoff claimied he knew what he was on about, backed up by evidence.
CyberNerd Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 WOW DID ban Linux users, for using Cedega or whatever it is called No they didn't. Both Cedega and Blizzard denied this, hence my accusation. Using a 3rd party program IS against the EULA, read it, Linux/Wine/Cedega doesn't meet the definition of a 3rd party application in the EULA which I read. AN “UNAUTHORIZED THIRD PARTY PROGRAM†AS USED HEREIN SHALL BE DEFINED AS ANY THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY “ADDON,†“MOD,†“HACK,†“TRAINER,†OR “CHEAT,†THAT IN BLIZZARD'S SOLE DETERMINATION: (i) ENABLES OR FACILITATES CHEATING OF ANY TYPE; (ii) ALLOWS USERS TO MODIFY OR HACK THE GAME INTERFACE, ENVIRONMENT, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IN ANY WAY NOT EXPRESSLY AUTHORIZED BY BLIZZARD; OR (iii) INTERCEPTS, “MINES,†OR OTHERWISE COLLECTS INFORMATION FROM OR THROUGH THE GAME. IN THE EVENT THAT THE GAME DETECTS AN UNAUTHORIZED THIRD PARTY PROGRAM, THE GAME MAY (a) COMMUNICATE INFORMATION BACK TO BLIZZARD, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION YOUR ACCOUNT NAME, DETAILS ABOUT THE UNAUTHORIZED THIRD PARTY PROGRAM DETECTED, AND THE TIME AND DATE THE UNAUTHORIZED THIRD PARTY PROGRAM WAS DETECTED; AND/OR (b) EXERCISE ANY OR ALL OF ITS RIGHTS UNDER THIS AGREEMENT, WITH OR WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE TO THE USER. http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/eula.html
