When we start jailing the people responsible. Until there's real-world, demonstrable examples of personal liability backed up with convictions, they won't care enough.

So if the person was told/trained not to do it and did it anyway, they go to jail. If their boss coerced them into doing so, they go to jail too. If they weren't trained / instructed, the person who should have ensured they were goes to jail.

@all:

It beats me why staff need to take sensitive school data home when they have remote access to their work areas and Sims.

But then that is the mentality of some folk they just don't learn or want to for that matter. :(

Until data protection is taken seriously by the folk at the top, this sort of thing will continue to happen.

It's all good and well suspending the member of staff that took the data home, but there should be an Endpoint system in place that stops them from being able to do this in the first place.

right, so the only copy of this data was stored on a laptop and a usb stick??? :o

No, they have an encrypted database, but as with all encryption, as soon as someone decrypts data and makes a copy, the data is no longer encrypted. The user should not be able to make a copy of the data in the first place.
