Disabling internet in one room.

Ok, I've installed and run LanView3 for the first time. In terms of "blocking the internet" it's not very good I must say. IT doesn't actually block the internet instead it stops Internet Explorer and Firefox from running (other browsers too, I presume)

 

Anyone who's spent any time in a school will know that the minute you block iexplore.exe from running, the kids will simply type http://www.google.com (or whatever) into an explorer window. You can browse the net quite happily from Explorer.

 

Maybe I've done something wrong, apologies if I have, but please show me where.

Have you actually tried that? Because it doesn't work..

No eejit is right that happens here. I once experimented with a software restriction policy on IE which locked that down fine but they were go into explorer and get through that way. The only native thing I have seen to do some kind of locking down on addresses only applies to UNC paths which is already inplace.

I am ofc open to suggestions.

Indeed - we *did* have an issue with this previously, but Kevin (the Boss) solved it by going via the native windows API.

As for TightVNC - any VNC will be, vanilla, Real, Tight, or otherwise, just as long as it uses the standard VNC port. We simply prefer Tight because it's configuration works best for us (e.g. hiding the tray icon).

Yep, I wouldn't have mentioned it unless I tried it. Explorer didn't close for us. We are using XP SP2 with a Windows 2003 server, if that's of any use. Any idea why that's not working then? It would be a fantastic product if that works, does it also stop other programs from going online. In the past kids have been able to surf the web using Windows Media Player even.

I have just tried it on two clients and mine displays the same behaviour as eejit. The IE closes fine but an internet URL is let through in Explorer. The Workstations are Win 2k.

right ok lets try this how did client exe get installed via a msi pushed out via gpo etc

 

or manaually installation running client setup exe.

 

is this logged in as restrietec desktop or as asystem admin does it make any difference using different logins..

 

what website are you trying to with...

We ran the client setup on the machine (I did notice that it extracted an msi - that'll be bloody handy if we get this working)

 

The pages we tried to access was just google.

 

We were logged in as an admin. I'll try with a restricted user.

Just caught up on this topic

 

I have these points to make;

 

1. Please report this bug on my site. I have limited users of non-RM users so clearly our area of expertise will be RM networks. Unless non-RM sites report these bugs they will go un-noticed

 

2. LV3 is technically still in beta - so yes there may be problems.

 

3. Try removing IEexplore.exe from the list of banned applications. Strange I know, but i'd be interested to know what happens.

 

Please note however - instead of slating it for not working, work with us to get it working.

Were not slating your program at all we are just reporting back our experience of it. The program seems very good for the most part and I will enjoy using it once these few hiccups are out of the way. I am however just trying to sort a problem where its constanly closing my firefox even though this machine/user has never been in the banned internet group. All this workstation has on is the server and this isnt effecting IE for some reason.

I had that, just the other way round. My firefox session was ok but it kept killing IE. Very annoying when I'm trying to approve updates on the WSUS server.

 

I fully expect its something I've done because I've just installed it and not read the docs or looked at it properly yet.

A quick way to get around it is to remove firefox.exe and iexplore.exe from the Internet Banned Applications list as specified in the Startup batch. A quick restart of the Server app will soon sort it until a fix can be investigated or found.

 

Always make sure there is no trailing ; at the end of the list however as this causes some issues. There is a fix, but I can't remember if it's in the current release or not. Will check when I get home.

Havent been at work today to try it out further but....

 

1. Do you have to install the client part of the proggy on the machines on the domain? (sorry if that is a silly question hehe)

 

2. I currently have a mixture of UltraVNC & RealVNC on the machines at the moment - do I *have* to use tightvnc or will it use any that is on the pc?

 

3. ....um...sure there was something else but my mind is a tad forgetful sometimes

Yes, the client needs to be installed on any machine you wish to manage with Lanview

 

Any implementation of VNC should work fine, if it uses the standard VNC protocols, then they should work fine. Never tested ultra, but I'm fairly sure I tested it with Real at some point and it worked fine.

 

I don't invisage any problems.

Yes look under the RM versions they are MSIs.
