rant! teachers and projectors!!!!!

It is annoying to walk in and find them on in lunchtimes when the classroom is empty... Though to be fair most the teachers here do seem to turn them off when not being used. Don't most projectors turn off automatically when no signal is given for a set amount of time? I know that solves the problem of them being left on overnight/weekend if the computers are on a schedule.

Classroom left empty with projector on, I just turn it off. Never had anyone complain yet.

This is what I sent to the bursar and my line manager

 

I would like to send this all members of the teaching staff, however before I do, I would like to get your approval first.

 

Over the last week (excluding last Friday), I walked around school and counted how many projectors were left on, after 3:15pm. (I asked Brian to check on Friday) It worked out like this

 

Monday – 14

Tuesday – 9

Wednesday – 12

Thursday – 16

Friday - 13

 

Now the cost for running a projector works out as the following

 

7p per hour for bulb use (based on cost of bulb and life expectancy)

5p per hour for projector use (based on cost of projector and life expectancy)

39p per hour for electricity use (Approximately)

 

Now the majority were not switched off until 4:00pm – 4:15pm (by Brian), so it is costing the school a lot of money to keep them running. In an effort to save the school money, please turn them off at the ending of your lesson; unless you are due to teach in the same room straight after. Just so you know how much it costs the school, below is a costing based on each day for the projectors being left on.

 

Monday - £7.14

Tuesday - £4.59

Wednesday - £6.12

Thursday - £8.16

Friday - £6.63

 

Working out over the course of a week that is £32.64

Working out over the course of an academic year that is £1272.96 (using the above figures)

 

This is all on wasted projector hours and bulb hours, as well as energy.

 

In the current climate where we are trying to save as much money and energy, and trying to be as green as possible, it really does pay to turn your projector off as soon as you are finished with it. For the future, can you PLEASE turn your projectors off, so that we can have better longevity of them, as well as save the school some money. It may not seem like much per projector, but it does add up.

 

You may feel that this does not apply to you; however it applies to all members of teaching staff as you all use the boards at some point in each week (be it in form time or during lessons).

 

I am sorry if it sounds as if I am on a high horse, however it is a concern of mine as the bulb hours get wasted away like this and it costs a lot of money to replace them!

 

Just hope that it does the trick!

That’s per hour. Surely they go unused more than 1 hour a day.

I would post bigger numbers to get a bigger impact and make people take notice. Say something like leaving 15 projectors all day every day is £42.84 a day or £214.2 a week or over the course of a year £8000+

In that case post the cost for leaving a projector on overnight along with the yearly cost if they do it often. Make them think. Explain those prices are at night and cost more dueing the day.

leaving projectors on all day would cost £65.03p (we have 17 IWB's and projectors in the school).

 

Over 1 week that is £325.13

Over 1 academic year that is £12679.88

 

I am actually quite shocked at that!

have worked it out to be a cost of 23p per hour to keep a projector running. (cost of bulb / estimated life in hours)

 

then you have to add on estimated electricity per hour.

 

and your time for cleaning them, even if you say every 30 hours 10 minites claening filters etc... in 1800 hours thats 10 hours just cleaning it * at what ever your hourly rate may be

 

Then times it by how ever many hours are shown on your projectors lamp hours.

 

It does work out expensive and I dont think people, teachers especially realise.

if I factored in time to change bulbs and clean filters, then it would go up another £50 or so a year

Projectors are just costly non-stop

To buy, install, repair, replace, lamps........

 

I'm forever moaning at staff here to switch them off, yet they remain on at break, lunch, after school, sometimes overnight or over weekends

 

I gave up what seemingly became a losing battle, and moved on to trying to reduce printing costs instead. That proved to be equally as difficult, so now I just repair what breaks, order new supplies, and if anyone from SMT/Finance moans about the cost I'll send them to the members of staff that are responsible.

 

It's not worth your own time/stress trying to deal with it, just let them suffer when the lamp blows mid-term and you don't have any replacements due to lack of funding.

Well, if nothing else you folks reminded me to get the handheld Dyson out and clean the filters... Thank $deity I did... Two were cultivating a 3mm thick dust farm on their filters... :eek:

 

As for the rationals... In primaries in particular you put all this information together, make a nice little report and then you put a summary on the front with the cost in VERY BIG NUMBERS!

 

If you really want to get their attention though, you equate it to TA posts, new computers, "that software" that they've wanted since year dot, etc...

 

I say this purely because there isn't a headteacher in the UK right now that isn't staring at a massive shortfall in funding this year and looking at redundancies.
