sunray 2 setup

hi i have bought 2 sunray 2's on ebay to test out with terminal services. I have heard loads about these and if they are good and i can sell them to the head i will buy some.

 

The problem i have is i need to set them up to demo them to the head. I know very little about the setup of these. what i do know is i need a solaris server and sunray server software.

 

 

What i am asking is can someone point me in the direction of the software, is it free or is there a demo as i cannot buy it till i have shown the head!!

 

Also can someone give me a step by step guide to installing and configuring the sunray server software and linking it in with windows TS. (I am ok at setting up TS)

What you will need is Solaris 10, which is a freen download from here

 

Solaris Operating System

 

You will also need the Sun Ray Software and the Windows Connector

You will need to set up a Sun account to download these.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction for the software and the wikis, i have just tried installing and the first problem i hit is solaris does not appear to install apache, i believe this is required?

 

How can i install apache or how can i get it to do it during solaris install?

Apache Tomcat comes with the Sun Ray download for you to install.

hi kim and andy,

 

that has been very helpful sofar, i installed the srss and the srwc last night and used the web admin gui (to check apache was working.)

 

i now plug my sunray in and it comes up with the blue sun microsystems screen with the grey box.

 

It obtains an ip address (192.168.1.23) and a solaris server address (192.168.1.8) from DHCP server. However it should then, i have been told show up a green tick to show it has upgraded the firm ware. This machine is showing a red cross and an open padlock.

 

Where have i gone wrong?, i presume it is looking at the tftp boot dir on the solaris server?

 

Could it be the DHCP options (66 and 67?) what should they be set to?

 

Or is it more likely to be the tftp boot folder?

Hi Nick,

 

The red cross and padlock refer to the Encryption & Server Authentication modes within SRSS. (ie, they are disabled currently)

 

If it is hanging there I suspect there may a firmware management problem, can you check the on screen code in the bottom right hand corner of the floating window.

26B may indicate that the Sun Ray are not getting Vendor specific info. How have you turned on Sun Ray options via utadm ?

Sorry for being O.T. (well sort of O.T) but OoOoOoh that looks a good site, is it a useful thing Cutter Team that site? I am tempted to buy a cheap SunRay off eBay for demo purposes to the SLT to keep pushing it and I think even I could manage to fumble through that process to setup a quick bodge it to demo it to them in our own time....

It's a reasonable link but the 4.0 version is EOL and will be end of support in April.

 

That said, the general outline is reasonable but it will provide only a very basic implementation, we (Cutter) have other modules and intelligence we put in.

 

Looking through that link, it doesn't mention the utadm stuff Andy outlined, you will need to sort that out (if you're using options 49/66) for the interconnect and make sure to turn lan connections on with utadm -L on and a cold restart.
