Moving domain name from ISP to another

Hi

 

Quite a simple little task really. A part of our school has their own seperate network and ISP. They currently use Tiscali, and have a domain name registered with them, of which they use purely for email. We are moving them over to plusnet and want to transfer their domain too, so they can keep their current email addresses.

 

Its probably a relatively basic task, but have never done this before!

 

Can anyone briefly explain the process involved?

Why Plusnet? They charge soo much for a domain name! Normally it's a question of changing the IPS(?) tag. Is it a .co.uk? If it is, you can pay Nominet £10 and they'll update it for you.

 

Personally I would look at Mythic-Beasts. If your going to use Plusnet email service, then look at Google Apps.

Its all in the name of standardisation! We have 4 other small sub domains to our main one, each of which uses plus.net as its ISP and to host its domain name. Our technicians and users are all very familiar with how plusnet works etc.

The general principle:

 

for .uk domain: Tell your new provider you are coming, ask them for their IPS tag. Tell the old provider you are going, and they are to change the tag appropriately. If they refuse or are generally ridiculous, ask Nominet and pay them the small fee (when I used to work in the industry, it was £17). It's advisable to have the nameservers changed to your new providers spec before having the tag changed.

 

for other domains: Ask your old provider to set the admin address to something you control and unlock the domain. Tell the new provider you are coming and to initiate a request. Answer the emails, wait a few days. Nameserver advice also applies.
