Backup Exec not overwriting

I have 2 servers both backing up to a 2TB NAS box, they work fine untill the space runs out (obviously) but they are both set to append then overwrite. They both have 1TB to work with and have a 10Gb buffer each.

 

From looking at the media on each servers BEx its set as Keep Indefinatly (god knows why), can I just delete the backups on the NAS and start again or is there a better method of ensuring it works from this point?

to delete files you have to move the file record in your media set to 'retired media'. then delete the record then delete the file.

 

I had a similar problem with files not being overwritten a while back (it would just create a new file), but I can't quite remember how I sorted it and nothing rings a bell in the application. I dislike b.E. cos nothing appears logical to me in there.

thats another problem with this kind of thing, a "just see if this works" takes potentially day(s) to see lol. One time backing up the weekly backup to the usb drive we put in the safe was on a mysterious go slow. it literally took a week for the job to run (putting a 400gb file to the drive and then verify it). and I couldn't really stop it as we needed the file on the drive in the safe.

 

the usual weekly backup takes 15-20 hours and then putting it on usb drive takes 20-35 with verification.

 

actually Im going to change how this works as it's getting silly.

2 things I think I changed on my backup exec setup were:

 

1. Created a custom media set, 1 for daily differential and 1 for a Full Backup and on the Custom Media sets set the overwrite protection period for the however many days.

 

2. Changed the Jobs to use the new media sets and set the job to append, but overwrite if necessary.

 

Don't think I changed anything else, but so far it seems to be rotating everything correctly on the Removable HDD.

I re-created the media sets and now get the following error -

 

Media CheckOnline media check : Insufficient online or nearline media is available to start job.Overwrite media check: There is no media online or nearline that can be overwritten or the job has been marked append/terminate.Media check status : Failed

 

Man I hate BE... at least one server passes the test run now

You might need to move all of the existing allocated media to the scratch media set to allow it to overwrite the one's that have already been created (never thought about that sorry)

There isnt any allocated media, I deleted it all and started fresh.

Incase anyone needs this in future I figured out the issue, and its a stupid issue too....

 

If you are using a share to backup to, i.e. a NAS Box you first have to create a test job with a single file in, run it and the media will then be allocated and you can do the real backup/test run after.
