hi all,

I have a query hopefully someone can point me in the right direction..

Right, going down the Thin client route and going to be using MS win 2k8 r2 for the TS

Thinking of deploying 25 TC's for admin staff with a view of external connections to the school via RDP some time this year

I need to know what CALS i need in a nut shell

I dont have a select or schools agreenment but more than happy to buy the CALS outright

Pic attached is what I was told by Ramesys, is what I need

However one of the quotes I have says we need the following:

Microsoft Select Licensing Option These are outright purchase licences. These are purchased at the time of installation S1 Microsoft Select Windows Server 2008 R2 Std lic.

S1 Microsoft Select Windows Remote Desktop Services Cals One required per staff member giving internal and external access One per user £11.50 -

TKA-00148S Microsoft Select Remote Desktop Services – External Connect Licence Gives the school unlimited connections to terminal Server externally 1 x £ 1,150.00

DOes this make any sense to anyone? Is the ramesys one , the one I need or my suppliers?

Any help as always is appreciated

Thanks in advanced

Thanks for the quick reply, if i wanted to open this externally to all staff; would I need to buy one EC License for each TS? im thinking of having 2 servers and 1 gateway server.

If I'm reading that weblink right then you don't need any External Connector licenses at all. You just need 1xTS-CAL for each user who may connect at the same time.

Ric is probably the oracle on this lot as he has spend a LOT of time looking at this stuff so maybe worth poking him to get his views....

I am not 100% sure on this, licensing is always a pain in the bum well at least sorting out an SA is.

Just wanted to poke my nose in and just to echo what john said really, i know Ric_ has been doing alot with Terminal Services and is probably hot on this topic and just incase he misses it as he is a very busy man i would just drop him a PM.. :)

I think what you have asked for is right, but i wouldn't want to say for definite tbh.

OK, does the built Windows in 5 CAL is also counted here ?

meaning: by default all Win Server OS comes with 5 and then we can just but additional 5 CALs on top of it ?

cmiiw.

Thanks.

The 5 CAL's that come with Windows Server Standard are Device/User CAL's not Terminal Server CAL's. To run Terminal Services you need 1 TS-CAL for each concurrent Device/User Remote Desktop'ing to the server.

I'm not sure if standard CAL's are required in addition to TS-CAL's, so the OP would need 24xTS-CAL's + 19xCAL's, or if only the 24xTS-CAL's would be required?

this is where im stuck..i do need some help on this as this could cost alot if not done correctly

phase 1 is deploying 25 tc's. i would need to buy 25 CALS to connect to the server (2k8) - is this right?

phase 2 is external connections thinking of 30-50 - again connecting to server 2k8 - can i buy one external connector license and this would be good for the 30 - 50 con current connections plus more as I buy new Terminal servers?

Any clarification would help me get something down on paper ready for my meeting tomorrow

Thanks to all who have replied

Is that an additional 30-50 users and are they external use only? If so then you'll probably want the EC license on top of the 25 TS-CAL's.

If those additional users need to access in work as well then it's TS-CAL's all the way as far as I can tell

The TS-CAL's cover internal and external access. The EC license only covers external access.

When it comes to External Connectors, Microsoft state:

"An external user is a person who is not an employee, or similar personnel of the company or its affiliates, and is not someone to whom you provide hosted services using the server software." (bold mine)

For employees, you are required to purchase CALs for them to access the network. TS CALs are additional to Windows server CALs so you will need:

1 x Windows Server CAL

AND

1 x Terminal Server CAL

for each staff member who will be using the TS services.

So initially 25 of each and then a further 30-50 for the next stage and so on.

From a price point of view, I'd recommend a Schools Agreement for cost effectiveness, with a Windows Server CAL being around £1.2 and a TS CAL approx £3.00 per year.

Hope that helps.

right, i think im there, so let me just double check this then..

- i need 25 TS CALS to connect the thin clients to the windows TS

- i need 25 CALS to connect to the servers OS

- I need to buy 1 external connector license for all users

Is this right?

@stariq: I think the confussion has come in due to the new naming scheme used by Microsoft. Terminal Services is no more... the new name is Remote Desktop Services.

If you have 25 users that will be using the service, you are best to license these users. You will require 25 'per user' Windows Server CALs and 25 per user RDS CALs.

However, you cannot mix and match your CAL types so, assuming you have more than 25 users, you either need to buy per user Windows Server CALs for all your users or license per device.

If you license per device, you will need 25 of each CAL to cover the users' terminals whilst at work and then you also need to license a machine for home use! (This can be avoided by providing a portable computer)

..nearly there..i think :D

i need 25 cals for my users (and not devices) as i will be looking at getting external connections via rdp

in the future

therefore 25 CALS for the OS and

25 TS CALS for the actual user to connect to the server

for external connections I can use one of the above CALs (providing they are not being used) is that right/ok?

As the external network is planned and budgeted, i buy additional CALs for the OS and TS

Have I got it right or totally missed??!!

Many thanks for all who replied
